Microphone problems

I started using skype but the microphone is not working. I can call people and can hear them but when i talk they cannot hear me. I also went to that standard sound recorder which comes with windows and recorded some sound but nothing gets played back. Is there something else that i need to do or should i be able to just plug in and use. I have not used a sound recording devise prior to this. Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Go into your volume control>options>properties and click a dot in "recording". There check to see if you have everything you need checked to use the microphone. You may have to just try different things to make it work.
