CD-ROM only works sometimes

Hi guys and gals,

I'm having a bit of a problem with my new laptop. It seems that when I insert CDs or CD-ROMs (although DVDs seem to be fine for some reason), the computer will only recognize that there's something in there about 1/8th of the time, which can become quite the headache especially if I am trying to install something.

Any advice?
