No video when plugging monitor into laptop

A member of staff here uses a port replicator/docking station with his laptop while in the office.

However while watching video playback, only the laptop screen displays the video, the monitor attached to the prot replicator only displays a black box.

How can this be rectified.

I think you need to go into Control Panel>Display and tell Windows which monitor is the primary one and which is secondary, otherwise only the laptop screen will be used even when another display device is plugged in.
