Hi astonh before I can help you can you do the following please

* Click here to download HJTsetup.exe
  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hello again Aston this will be a multipart fix so I would recommend that you copy and paste this post to a text file for ready reference as you will be working offline.

START

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

O21 - SSODL: bestreak - {874443fe-aa33-4ebf-a6ac-73208787e62d} - (no file)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

FOLLOWED BY

When it is done, it will show a log and tell you the scan is completed. Reboot your computer back to normal mode and and post the contents of c:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt as a reply to this topic.

THEN

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.

  • Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:

  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).

Hi Aston You don't appear to have done the uninstall list could you please do that for your next post Ta.

So to continue......

Please Download NoLop to your desktop from one of the links below...
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
  • First close any other programs you have running as this will require a reboot
  • Double click NoLop.exe to run it
  • Now click the button labelled "Search and Destroy"
<<your computer will now be scanned for infected files>>
  • When scanning is finished you will be prompted to reboot only if infected, Click OK
  • Now click the "REBOOT" Button.
  • A Message should popup from NoLop. If not, double click the program again and it will finish Please Post the contents of C:\NoLop.log along with a fresh HijackThis log
--If you receive an error, "mscomctl.ocx or one of its dependencies are not correctly registered," please download mscomctl.ocx to your system32 folder then rerun the program. --

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlog...processutil.htm

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O21 - SSODL: bestreak - {874443fe-aa33-4ebf-a6ac-73208787e62d} - (no file)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

Required Logs are NoLop, Smitfraud, Uninstall list and a new HJT

Looking a lot better now Aston just a few more bits and bobs to go through now. First off though how is the system running ?

To continue....................

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Next

To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:

Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
Double-click on the My Computer icon.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
After the new window appears select the View tab.
Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
Press the Apply button and then the OK button and close My Computer.
Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete these folders (if present):

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Axisballpollplatform
C:\Documents and Settings\Aston Hamilton\Application Data\Adobeum

Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6

The above Java programs are out of date and a security risk download and install the latest version from here

If you could now repost with the Rapport.txt and a new HJT plus an update on how your system is running :whistling:

Hi again,

doesn't seem to be any pop-ups & I haven't had a virus attack found by Norton since ... so fingers crossed...you seem to have done the trick...thnx sooooo much.
Regards,
Aston.

P.S. What programs do you recommend for keeping your pc running free....mine has slowed down so much over the last 12 months.

Here are the logs you wanted...

Congratulations Aston you now have a clean bill of health :whistling:

First thing that you can do now is delete the tools that I asked you to download as you no longer need them. Also rehide your system files reversing the previous process

Reference system improvements these are my personal opinions:

I see that you have tuneup utilities on your system. It is a program that I use to keep my system running smoothly I would suggest setting the system optimizer to run 1 click maintenance on a monthly basis. Depending on how many programs you install/uninstall run the registry defragmenter every 2 or 3 months.

Clear all temporary and internet files daily, for this I use CrapCleaner set to run at boot. (free)

Defragment your drive regularly (maybe weekly) depending on use. I use Contig from sysinternals with the GUI from rejzor using the power model setting. After the initial defragmentation it is extremely fast and thorough (free)

Your system start up is pretty lean with the exception of Norton which is a bit heavy on resources, and quicktime which does not really need to be run on start up. And maybe have just 1 active anti-spyware on start either Defender or AVG the choice is yours.

Now to get you off to a good start we will re-set your restore points so that all the bad stuff is gone for good. Then if you need to restore at some stage you will be clean. There are several ways to reset your your restore point but this is my method:

1. Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > System Restore.
2. On the dialogue box that appears select Create a Restore Point
3. Click NEXT
4. Enter a name e.g. Clean
5. Click CREATE

You now have a clean restore point, to get rid of the bad ones:

1. Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk Cleanup.
2. In the Drop down box that appears select your main drive e.g. C
3. Click OK
4. The System will do some calculation and the display a dialogue box with TABS
5. Select the More Options Tab.
6. At the bottom will be a system restore box with a CLEANUP button click this
7. Accept the Warning and select OK again, the program will close and you are done

LINKS

CrapCleaner Be aware that on the initial screen you will be asked if you want to install Yahoo toolbar I would recommend declining that offer

Power Defragmenter once you start the installation the program will ask to download contig.exe allow it to do this

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
To keep your operating system up to date visit monthly.
To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

If you have any further questions or problems I will continue to monitor this thread for a while
