Hi JD81...
When you tried to rename the Catroot2 folder, did you do it from command prompt? Did you stop the Cryptographic Service before you tried renaming?

Click Start, then Run, type cmd and click "Ok".
At the prompt, type each of the following, pressing "Enter" after each one.
net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2
oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc
exit
Reboot. Still get the error message?

Did you add the space after ren?

Yes, I had the space, and tried variations. Could there be a bug here as well? Whole system actually runs slower than it should. Takes a long time to access internet functions as well as booting.... JD

I've tried 5 of the suggested processes with no luck. I plan on reformating the drive over this weekend. I don't like doing that but figure at this point I probably have things so twisted it shouldn't boot! I do thank you for the input. It is the most help I've recieved from anyone so afr. I will be coming back as I run into other problems. I've passed along your site to some others that have needed help... Thanks again, JD
