You need to clean some stuff off it, if you do not want to buy an external HD for storage.
Actually, an external USB HD would be a good way to go if you do not have a backup.
With that said, and, I am sure I will forget something,,,,,
1. Clean out the system temp files, internet temp files, cache, and cookies.
2. Look at your add/ remove program group for programs you do not use, and uninstall them.
3. Look at your data and see if you can delete something, or move to CD.
The CCleaner is a good program for cleaning.

You can also right click the drive in Windows Explorer and choose properties, then go for Disk Cleanup which'll identify lots of things you can remove as per 123Runner's list...ie. internet history, temps files, etc.
