hi and welcome to Geekstogo

well you have a trojan on your machine that the scans did not pick up on.

This is fairly easy to remove;

start Hijack this, close all windows, including this one, then put a check next to the following entries and click on fix selected:

just to make sure there isn't anything hiding in there, could you please do the following:

Download: StartDreck from: http://www.greyknight17.com/
  • Extract the file into c:\startdreck.
  • Navigate to c:\startdreck and double-click on Startdreck.exe
  • When the program opens click on the Config button.
  • Then click on the unmark all button.
  • Put checkmarks in the following checkboxes:
  • Under Registry put a checkmark in the Run Keys checkbox.
  • Under System/Drivers put a check in the Running Proccess checkbox.
  • Press the OK button.
  • Press the Save button.
Type in the location you want to save the log to, or use the defaults which will save the log into the directory you are running the program from. If you choose the defaults the filename for the log will be StartDreck.log. please paste the log in your next response

hi shankas,

Your Logs are clean.

your issues may be caused by a lack of available ram. You have quite a large listing of auto starting programs. from this point it appears that you might be using your swap partition that windows uses to offset ram. I don't know you computer specs when it comes the amount of ram in it, however I would suggest disabling any programs you don't need running by going to Start>run then type in msconfig.
Next click on the startup tab in the window that opens, and uncheck any items that are not needed to run at startup. only uncheck the programs you installed that do startup like googletalk, yahoo messenger, norton ghost, norton protect and see if that helps.
Leave AVG checked otherwise you will have no virus protection.

Let me know how it works out.

hi shankas,

unfortunately I'm not sure why you are using so much RAM. lets see what all is starting up.

start Hijack this! and then open the misc. tools section.
look for generate startup list, there will be two check boxes next to it, please check both boxes then click on generate startup list. post the log in your next reply.

I see you are running Norton systemworks, by chance is this also supplying anti-virus protection too?

I would recommend uninstalling Norton, it is a known resource hog.

you also have a large amount of startup items, these will take memory away from your system also.

what I would recommend is the following to determine what is taking your memory:
  • hit ctrl-alt-delete to open the task manager
  • click on the processes tab
look through all the processes and find any that are running more than 50,000k under the Mem Usage column. list these in your next post, please include the process name and the Mem Usage listed.

I would say it's likely that is the problem, My firefox is currently using 39000k of Mem Usage. so I would say your firefox has a memory leak. I also know that Yahoo just came out with an update.
Even Yahoo messenger is running real high on the ram. do the following to determine if that is the problem:

to troubleshoot this you will need to uninstall Firefox, reboot your computer and see how it works. if it goes back to normal then Firefox is the problem.

if you are still having problems, uninstall yahoo messenger, reboot your computer and see how it works. if it is working normal again, download a new copy of Firefox and reinstall and see what happens. If it is working normal, then reinstall yahoo messenger. if your problem starts up again, then we know it's a combination of the two programs working at the same time. Then you have to make a decision on which on you want to keep, and which one you can live without.

This is, unfortunately, a time consuming way of finding out if one or the other is the only one causing the problem.

if after having both uninstalled, you still run into problems, please let me know so we can look elsewhere for the problem.
