I have a computer that won't connect to the Internet. Also, the wireless card won't connect up either.

I understand that there are some viruses on the computer and I am trying to follow the steps before sending a 'Hijack This Log', but I am having some issues. I tried to install the AVG Anti-Spyware software. I downloaded it from another computer and put it on a CD, but when I try to start it up and Update it, it won't work because it wants access to the Internet to download the updated definition files. Do you know of any way that I can get those definition files from the Internet (on another computer) and update the files on the computer that won't connect to the Internet?

Thanks for the help.

I just reviewed this post and it shows as being on a Windows 2000 machine. It is not Windows 2000, it is Windows XP.

Ok, I fixed the Windows 2000 problem by editing my profile.

I also found the solution to my first problem on the Ewido page where it gives the option to download the signature database as a manual install. So, I am moving ahead and will post any other problems or a HJT log as I go through the startup steps.

Thanks and sorry for jumping the gun.

Ok, I am now on the next step of SUPERAntiSpyware and I don't know how I can update it without connection to the Internet. SUPERAntiSpyware doesn't have an option to update manually or by downloading the signature (or whatever) files.

Help, what do I do now?

Thanks,

David

Ok, I started a topic on January 22 and I made some mistakes, so I replied to the topic and never got a reply back because someone probably saw my replies. I am starting a new topic with the same name so that it doesn't have any replies and maybe I can get some help. Sorry I didn't do it right the first time.

I have a computer that won't connect to the Internet. Also, the wireless card won't connect up either.

I understand that there are some viruses on the computer and I am trying to follow the steps before sending a 'Hijack This Log', but I am having some issues. I downloaded the AVG Anti-Spyware software from another computer and downloaded the signature files as a manual install, put it all on a CD and ran them on the problem computer. I cleaned up about 500+ files that were infected.

I then went on to the next step of downloading SUPERAntiSpyware. I can get the program, but I don't have the option (like for AVG Anti-Spyware) of downloading the update manually or downloading the signature files. Help, what do I do now?

Thanks for the help.

Hi, dlines :whistling:

Welcome to Geeks to go. I have merge your threads.

Lets check some settings on your system:
  • Enter your Control Panel and double-click on Network Connections
  • Then right click on your Default Connection
    • Usually Local Area Connection for Cable and DSL, or AOL Connection.
  • Left click on Properties
  • Double-Click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item
  • Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS Servers Automatically
  • Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen
  • Restart the computer
Go to Start->Run->Type CMD and click Ok. The MSDOS Window will be displayed. At the command prompt, type the following and press Enter after each line:

ipconfig /flushdns (The space between g and / is needed)
Exit

Restart the computer.

If that does not resolve the issue and you are running SP2, follow these steps:

Reset the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

Go to Start->Run, type CMD and click Ok. The MSDOS window will be displayed. At the prompt type the following and press Enter after each line:

netsh int ip reset C:\Resetlog.txt
netsh winsock reset catalog
Exit

Restart the computer.

Warning Programs that access or monitor the Internet such as antivirus, firewall or proxy clients may be negatively affected when you run the netsh winsock reset command. If you have a program that no longer functions correctly after you use this resolution, reinstall the program to restore functionality.
