welcome to geekstogo
boot into safemode and use msconfig to disable those startups that you do not need
post back if there is something you don't understand here.
(your computer could probably do with a system spring clean)

OK, here the spring clean to do once in a while, post back if there is something you don't follow(winkey is the button on the keyboard that looks like MS's)
Time to use your "runbox" to clean your computer,
(all these steps are done with the run box then)
deleting the prefetch files
-----------------------------
runbox command
- press keyboard buttons: winkey + r
- paste in the slot: prefetch
- press: enter
(the prefetch folder opens)
- press: ctrl + a
(select all is the same)
- press: shift + del
(deletes without prompt)
disc clean up
---------------
runbox command
- press keyboard buttons:winkey + r
- paste: cleanmgr.exe
- choose drive(normally C: )
- press: enter
(this process can take a long time)
checkdisk
------------
runbox command
- press the keyboard buttons: winkey + r
- paste in the slot: chkdsk /f /r
- press: enter
( black window appears)
- press: Y button
- press: enter
- reboot the comp
(this process is the longest, worse the screen may be
lost before hours later the computer arrives at the welcome screen)
disc defragmenter
----------------------
runbox command
- press the keyboard buttons: winkey + r
- paste in the slot: dfrg.msc
- press enter
(this process can take a long time)
deleting internet cookies, files and history
-------------------------------------------------
- press the keyboard buttons: winkey + r
- paste in the slot: inetcpl.cpl
- press: enter
- click: delete cookies
- click: delete file
- click: clear history
disable unwanted startups
------------------------------
runbox command
- press: winkey + r
- paste: msconfig
- press: enter
- click tab: start ups
- keep: the AV and firewall entriies enabled,
- disable: 100% unused or unneeded entries
- Unsure about the start up: http://www.bleepingc...r.com/startups/
(IMPORTANT: enable all startups before running the Hijackthis program)

Yep, the button that looks like Microsoft's flag and if you press that button with the r button then up pops the run box, the runbox being a slot where one can put certain shortcuts(targets)
Since you say you are learning, it would be a very good thing to learn a few runbox commands as shortcuts because each time you add a shortcut to the runbox it remembers so that the following time you don't even have to type the command as one types just the first letter or two and it offers you the choice and one chooses with enter, a lot quicker then using the start menu
for example try out some of these: iexplore, devmgmt.msc, osk, then when you feel a little more confident here are more
runbox commands, list in abc order
http://fleamailman.f...wtopic.php?t=99
runbox commands subdirectories
http://fleamailman.f...c.php?p=190#190
variables that work with the runcommand box
http://fleamailman.f...c.php?p=280#280
um, hope this helps

this helped ,but I think I have gotten into trouble. I have been using my computer as administrator, I may have opened up myself to viriuses. I tried to run computer in safe mode but everything was enlarged and I could'nt get to internet connect, I think I have really messed up my computer. I appreciate all the help you are giving me, now I at least have a hope of fixing my goofs. thanks so much.

Though it varies by operating system, typically safe mode loads as few executable modules as possible and usually disables devices, except for the minimum necessary to display information and accept input.
Which is why the screen resolution was different, and why it would not connect
