Outlook problems with new server

My company just purchased a new server at my work and it has windows server 2003 R2 Standard installed on it. The old one was running on windows 2000. There are no issues with the new server at all and we can connect remotely and access files, etc. The issue we are having is receiving our emails through outlook. You can get them sometimes but not always. The only solution weve come up with so far is to disconnect from the VPN and reconnect and keep trying Outlook. Does anyone have any suggestion?
