Hi and welcome :whistling:

I can't see where that file is loading from this log.
I'd like to see a couple other logs please.

First please create a folder on the desktop for hijackthis
Then move hijackthis.exe to that new folder.
Hijackthis makes backups of anything we fix and all are best kept in its own folder.
Once done.....

Open Hijackthis
Click "open misc tools section"
Check the following items beside "generate startuplist log":

"list also minor sections (full)"
"List empty sections (complete)"

Hit "generate startuplist log" and OK.

Post results here.

Next:

1. Download this file and save it to c:\ :

http://download.blee...Bs/combofix.exe
http://www.techsuppo...ls/combofix.exe

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
You will temporarily lose desktop while scan is running. Once scan is done desktop will return to normal.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

You getting any popups, browser redirects? System slowdowns? Wierd error messeges?

Thanks

Hi

Is that {DF4DDE1-F540-11D2-9540-0040052FC4F9} file still running at boot-up?

I'd like to know what is in this temp folder. odd one.
Click start> run> type cmd and hit enter.
A dos box pops up...

Copy this line:

dir /s "C:\DOCUME~1\ALLUSE~1\Application Data\TEMP" > list.txt & notepad list.txt

Right click in open cmd box> choose "paste"> hit enter.

Notepad will show a log.

Post its contents.

You can prolly stop AVG AS guards & autoupdater from loading. It can slow system down quite a bit.

Open AVG> in the main screen under "Your computer's security"
Click "Change state" beside "resident shield"
Click "change state" beside "automatic updates"

Both will change to red. (inactive)

Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and uncheck "Start with Windows"
Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon > choose exit.

If you don't plan on registering your printer/scanner you can have Hijackthis fix this line to get rid of the nag at boot:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PP8 Reminder] "C:\Program Files\Scansoft\PaperPort\WebEreg\NAVBrowser.exe" -r "C:\Program Files\Scansoft\PaperPort\WebEreg\navLoad.ini"

Should be able to register it when you feel like it from start menu.

Please scan this file:

C:\WINDOWS\_msrstrt.exe

At either of the following sites:

http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.virustotal.com/

Let me know results.

Let me know if shutting off AVG helped any.

Thanks :whistling:

Hi

See if you can copy this file someplace & scan it at Virus Total:

C:\WINDOWS\_msrstrt.exe

For some reason VT is rteading it as 0 bytes where clearly in your combofix log it is not.

Click start> run> type cmd and hit enter.
Type the following commands and hit enter after each one.

cd c:\
dir /s {DF4DDE1-F540-11D2-9540-0040052FC4F9}.* > wierd.txt & notepad wierd.txt

Wait till notepad pops up with log and post the results.

Next:

Download Bobbi Flekman's RegSearch from
http://www.xs4all.nl...s/regsearch.zip

Create a folder for RegSearch on the C: drive called C:\RegSearch. You can do this by going to My Computer then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it RegSearch. Extract all the files from the zip archive into that folder.

Open the RegSearch folder and double-click the icon for RegSearch.exe to launch the program.
Copy / Paste the following line into the Search Box:

{DF4DDE1-F540-11D2-9540-0040052FC4F9}

then hit Ok

After completion Notepad will be opened with all the found instances of the string. The resulting file is saved in the same location as RegSearch.exe.

Post results.

Next:

Download blacklight beta from here:

http://www.f-secure....blacklight.html
Accept agreement which takes you to download page.
Download blbeta.exe to desktop.
Disconnect from internet
Shut down running apps by the clock.
Shut down any open browser windows and explorer windows.
Double click blbeta.exe
Wait for program to load. If you get any warnings about a driver loading and wants to run thru explorer; let it. It is blbeta.
click "scan"
Wait for scan to finish.
Please don't run anything else or open windows while scan is running.
Once it is done it will tell you if items are found. If so...click "next" then "close".
Do NOT use this tool to rename anything! Sometimes legit items are hidden by malware as well as legit apps.
Log file called fsbl +time+date.txt is created on desktop.

Please post contents of log.

Thanks :whistling:

cd c:\
dir /s {DF4DDE1-F540-11D2-9540-0040052FC4F9}.* > wierd.txt & notepad wierd.txt

Im a little confused with this. Am I supposed to type in "cd c:\", then "dir /s {DF4DDE1-F540-11D2-9540-0040052FC4F9}.* > wierd.txt", then "notepad wierd.txt"?

Hi

Sorry for the confusion
You can either do it like you asked or type that one whole command in one line after cd c:\ like I did.
We can often put several commands on one line. windows will run each one in turn as if you typed em in seperately.

Either method will work. :whistling:

Hi

Download Gmer from here:

http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip

Unzip it.
Disconnect from internet & shut down Antivirus to prevent conflicts.
Shut down also any other unneeded apps including any open browser windows.
The less stuff we got running the less chance of false positives in log.
Double click gmer.exe to run it.
Allow driver to install if asked (gmer.sys)
You may warning at program start that there is possible rootkit activity and do you want to run scan.

Say OK to run scan.
If no warning just click "scan"
Let the scan finish. It may take a while so please be patient.
Once done press "copy"
Open notepad> press "ctrl+v" to paste log.
Save log.

Re-enable your antivirus, re-connect to internet & post that log here

Thanks :whistling:

I attached my log, but the {DF4DDE1-F540-11D2-9540-0040052FC4F9} thing is gone :whistling: . But now Spycatcher pops up saying a rootkit is trying to be installed and gmer says that too. What should I do now?

Hi

Looking at the gmer log now.
Good to hear that file quit popping up.

Where exactly is SpyCatcher saying rootkit is being installed? Does it give you file name/location? Registry path?

Gmer log you posted looks OK.
AVG, Norton & SpyCatcher all install low level drivers that load early. Some of these are listed in gmer scan but they are normal.
SpyCatcher seems to hide parts of itself to protect it from being terminated by malware.-- normal for SC.

Can you try Gmer again please?
This time though I don't wanna run scan. I want to see what is in the warning window.

Go to start> click run> type:

c:\windows\gmer.exe

Hit enter.
Gmer opens...
If warning click NO.
Click "copy"
Copy to log & post it here.

If you cant get info from SpyCatcher from its event log try to get a screenshot of warning.
I don't have this program so I don't know how to get logs and stuff. Should be some kind of "event log" that will show you events like warnings, protection alerts, updates, etc.

Lets look at a bootlog.

Open msconfig and click the boot.ini tab.
Checkmark /bootlog
Apply & close.

Go ahead and reboot.
At reboot when you get the msconfig warning...just checkmark "don't tell me this again" and say OK.

DElete this file:

c:\windows\ntbtlog.txt

Reboot

Post contents of c:\windows\ntbtlog.txt

Thanks :whistling:
