I have cleaned up a system that had serious adware and malware problems. There remains one pesky item that I can't get rid of. Two IE "Trusted Zone" entries keep returning even after they are deleted. (See O15 in the log below).

Hi byoder,

You forgot one: to download and uninstall the newest version of HJT to its own folder. This is a crucial step because so many more infections are visible in the most recent version.

1) Delete your existing copy of HijackThis.

2) Download the most current version of Hijackthis (v.1.99.1)to a folder of its own. HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

A. Please go to your 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' and name the folder 'HijackThis'.

B. Download Hijackthis from:HERE

C. Double Click on 'HijackThis.zip' to extract and install HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

D. Close ALL windows except HJT

E. SCAN with HJT and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')

F. POST the log in this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
*choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
*uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
*Close the window with ok
*All hidden files will now be visible

Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
. Click the Config button located in the lower right hand corner of the HijackThis window.
. When the new screen opens, find and click the Miscellaneous Tools button.
. Then choose the Open Process Manager button.
. From the list of processes, hilight the following items by clicking them, ONE AT A TIME, then DELETE them by clicking the KILL button:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\__download__\P53261730.so

Once all items have been KILLED, click the Back button which will return you to the HijackThis main window. Now place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe, msmsgs.exe
O4 - Startup: file[1].exe
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.frame.crazywinnings.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.frame.crazywinnings.com (HKLM)

Now with all the items selected, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window and Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

*Restart the computer.
*as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*press Enter.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following file/folder and delete them (if they are present):

file[1].exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\__download__\P53261730.so

Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

Finally,RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everytjhing looks now.

Hi byoder,

Frustrating? You don't know the half of it. These baddies are now smart enough to use MS names to confuse. Enough of my woes.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

1) We must disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes.

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck: Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck: Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.

Remember to reactivate it once you are all clean.

2) Time to work on your log again:

One touch up apparently.

1)Please download Winhelp2002's Deldomains.inf to your desktop.

Right-click on the deldomains.inf file and select Install

Once it is finished your Zones should be reset.

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE/Spyads, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE/Spyads, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.
Right-click on the deldomains.inf file and select Install

2) Please post a fresh log after you have finished the above

I am now connected to the cable modem & the network and the popups have stopped. I still have an annoying flashing triangle in the system tray warning me that the computer is infected with spyware & wants to take me to msxpsupport.com. That it is in the system tray (not in msconfig) worries me. Should I be worried.
It is so nice :tazz:

to see that other stuff gone.

Hi byoder,

Well that is good news. Remember to reconnect your Microsoft Anti-Spyware program and reboot your system. If the triangle still wants to take you to Microsoft, go there. When I get a yellow triangle it is always because I am in need of an update.

Congratulations, your new log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
2. Left click on "System Restore Tab"
3. Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
4. Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1.Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
2.Click on "Apply"

2. Another cleanup that will help is to go to Start>Programs>Acccessories>System Tools> Disk Cleanup and put a check mark beside all the entries in the disk cleanup window that ask you what you want to clean. Clean all hard drives and all files. This will get rid of any malware that is hiding in the temporary folders.

3. Make sure that all are gone, by checking the folders that the Temporary Internet Files and Temp files are stored in. To do so use Control Panel > Internet Options(or right click the IE icon on the desktop and choose Properties). Click Delete Files on the General Tab - place a check in the Delete all offline content box, then 'Clear History' and then press OK (or go direct to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofilename\Local Settings\Temp\ folder) and
C:\Documents and Settings\userprofilename\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\)

4. Empty your Recycle Bin

5. Double Check the following folders to make sure they are empty:
C:\WINDOWS\Profiles\your account\Temporary Internet Files
Delete all the files in (and any subfolders of) the C:\Windows\Temp\ folder (or go direct to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofilename\Local Settings\Temp\ folder) and C:\Documents and Settings\userprofilename\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\)

6. You may find that you have to repeat the steps a couple of times.

7.Finally, Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

To protect yourself further:

IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
