Basically, while I don't currently have a serious malware problem (or hopefully, I don't), I'd like to see if my CPU is A-OK. Or, if there is any possible spyware / malware threats lurking around. It feels like my computer is kinda laggy when browsing the internet.

Here's my Hijackthis log:

Thank you guys in advance. Also, if this helps, this is what Spybot Search & Destroy says:

http://i5.photobucke...pg?t=1170722241

However, after this, I removed everything via Spybot. However, when I rerun it, these two things

Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.AntiVirusDisabl...
Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.FirewallDisabl..

stay on. The rest of this stuff (outside of WildTangent) were cookies.

Also, one last thing, if my CPU has any malware / spyware, is there any threat of ID theft? I did some personal things on this CPU, and I'm just wondering if it's secure and in no chance of being risked.

Hello Compkid416...welcome to G2G!

I do not see anything malicious in your HJT log.

Regarding the Spybot findings concerning the AV and Firewall, the first thing I would check is that the AV and FW are indeed ON and RUNNING. They certainly appear to be based on the HJT log.

If they are, then I believe that this is simply Spybot telling you that you have notification disabled of these two security applications in Windows Security Center. In essence, you are relying upon the individual applications to notify you of any problems with them, not Windows.

Many security applications like to advise you of problems themselves, and subsequently switch off the Windows Notification....and this is what Spybot I think is telling you. If you are satisfied that all is running and in proper order, you can just ignore the Spybot message. Do you have your McAfee security product taking over the notification of AV and FW problems from Windows? I would bet that is a distinct possibility.

I believe you can somehow 'turn off' Spybot from reporting this with every scan...but I'm not a Spybot expert by any stretch...but they have a support forum here: http://forums.spybot.info/

See if they agree with the above...but to me, your HJT log appears 'clean'.

Hope this helps....

Oh ok, much thanks CFA.

Do you reccommend any extra security protection or any of that other good stuff? Should I ditch McAfee, seeing as I can't update it's AntiVirus index?

Well, if you cannot update it because it is 'expired', then by all means remove it.

I also forgot to mention that according to your HJT log your have multiple AV programs installed and running on your machine...and this is not a good thing. Anti-Virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

If you choose to install more than one Anti-Virus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time. Personally, I would choose one AV program to go forward with and remove all others.

One other thing I will mention is that your Java program is out-of-date, and this can be a security risk...you should update it by doing the following:

Update Java and Remove old Java Versions
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 .<== scroll down the list to find THIS entry
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Remove older Java Versions:
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start >> Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Install latest Java Version:
  • From your desktop, double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.

While the following list is not exhaustive or necessarily 'complete' (there are many good security programs out there), the following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.[/b]
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Does this help? Are you having any other computer malware problems?

Hmm, OK.

I cleaned out my Java + got the latest updated version.

I don't think I have any malware problems if you say my HJT log checks out. However, I'm curious, I actually do have 2 anti virus programs running? Which ones? And would you like me to post an updated HJT log?

Norton/Symantec (some security suite product with AV and FW I believe) and McAfee Security Center...have you had both of these on the system before? What product is your active AV/Security program?

We can always check your uninstall list:

Open HijackThis, click Open Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Hmm...I've got Norton Ghost too, but it never installed a Norton Security suite product too. I don't see anything alarming in the uninstall list.

Anyway, what we should do to completely (or as completely as possible) remove the Symantec/Norton Security product from your PC is have you run the Symantec/Norton Removal Tool...I don't see any Symantec or Norton entries in your uninstall list, but using the tool from the manufacturer is the recommended way to remove their products anyway.

You can find the removal tool here: http://service1.syma...005033108162039

Go there, run the removal tool (since you are not using the product) and then post back with another HJT log so we can see what if anything remains.

OK, removed it.

Here's the latest HJT log.

Perfect....that HJT looks GREAT! I hope your computer is running well...the removal tool removed all the remnants of Norton Security suite from the registry....

If your computer isn't having any problems, you should be good to go...let me know.

Alright, thank you for your time and your patience.

The only issue right now could be with Mozilla FireFox (ie. it doesn't run as smooth as before), but I'll live with it. Once again, much thanks for your time. Appreiciate it.

No problem... :whistling:

In case you don't know, Mozilla Firefox has support forums located here: http://forums.mozill...g/index.php?c=4 and here: http://forums.mozill...wforum.php?f=38

I'm not a firefox expert, but perhaps someone at those sites could help....

Good luck!
