I have Dell Latitude laptop that has been running very slowing and shutting down frequently. I was loading Spyboat and it crahsed. I tried to reload Windows 98 on it by booting it up on the CD and got and error message 53% through the scan that there was a "long line" in the registry that I could not fix.

In trying to start it with the Windows 98 boot disk I get the following in dos:

The follwing file is missing or corrupted: C:\ESSAUDIOIO.SYS
There is an error in yoru CONFIG.SYS file on line 1

C:\C:\ESSAUDIOIO.SYS
Bad command or file name

C:\C REM following line added by Bay Manager. Please do not remove.

C:\>C\WINDOWS\dechnl.exe
Bad command or file name

C:\>

C:\>

and that is it.

There is nothing in Google about ESSAUDIOIO.SYS and dechnl.exe. I don't know what they are but I would try to enter safe mode and run a number of updated antimalware programs. Usually I use AVG Free antivirus, Spybot and and Ad-Aware SE. Some programs will not run on win 98 but those mentioned will run.
