Downloaded Advenger here at work and will run tonight on my home PC.
Now that I can not only connect to the internet, but also get a server page displayed, how do I/we close out the other Topic in the Web Browser Forum? Title is "Can access internet, but can't locate server"

Phil,
Regarding browers, best I can say is that they had me Reset Web Settings and I was able to get a server page to display.
As far as running Avenger, I failed badly....starting with your instructions "This is the fix. Please note you need to substitute your name as it appears on your PC' path to the file, into the area which says "YOUR NAME" in the script below." This went right over my head, as I never saw anything where I could be in "Your Name"??? sorry! I got the following errors: can't find C: Doc& settin's|yourname|desktop|fixit.reg and it also wanted me to load a CD? Like I said I failed really bad......I included Avenger notepad if that will help and a new HJT. Also failed the CMD trying to find recycler...including Nortin report.

Hello Don

The "YOUR NAME" substitution is really very easy.

This is the line in the script of Avenger:

Programs to launch on reboot:

C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR NAME\Desktop\fixit.reg

The red text needs to be replaced with your name as it appears on your PC. That might be Don Stewart or even Compaq_Owner.

Then the script would read:
C:\Documents and Settings\Don Stewart\Desktop\fixit.reg

or

C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\Desktop\fixit.reg

I trust that makes perfect sense now.

Looking at your HJT log, I see that you do NOT have Norton installed, therefore there will NOT be a Norton Protect folder to delete.

There is still just one entry to fix, which has been there since the start.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

If this does not disappear, then a manual fix will be necessary.

First, we need to backup your registry:
Please go to Start > Run
Paste in the following line: regedit /e c:\registrybackup.reg
Click OK.
It won't appear to be doing anything, that's normal. Your mouse pointer may turn to an hour glass for a minute. Please continue when it no longer has the hour glass

Now go to and click on START > RUN > type in regedit > hit ENTER. A new window will open. Look at the left-hand pane. At top left, click EDIT > FIND > cut and paste CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497 into the long box. Place a checkmark or tick against Key, Value and Data > click Find Next. When the PC finds the key, delete it by right clicking and choosing DELETE. There may be more than one entry, so click F3 key to continue searching until you are told that the search is complete.

Also, the centre graphic of the three shows a window with a warning from Web Mail, unfortunately obscured by another window. Where is the warning coming from? What does it say?

In order to stop your PC connecting with "known bad sites" please install MVPS hosts file.

Download and Install MVPS hosts file.

This replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.

Please go to: MVPS Hosts file

If you scroll down the MVPS page, you will see an animated folder next to hosts.zip Download that file to your desktop and right click on it, choose EXTRACT ALL and a window will open containing the files, double click mvps.bat and a DOS screen will open inviting you to press any key to continue. That's all there is to it.

Please bookmark/add to favourite this site as the file is updated every 14 days, so you need to do this once a month.

From now on, whilst surfing, you will notice some sites not loading and you may see the word “advertisement” on some pages, this is because the IP address of either the site or advertiser is known as bad and it is being blocked.

Hi Phil,

Looks like the user didn't perform instructions correctly, but I won't use the Avenger here anymore.

I won't fix those entries anyway, because that scanner is most probably flagging them, while Spywareblaster or some other scanner set them there.
That scanner the user is running doesn't look at the values of those keys so it seems. I am pretty sure that the values of those keys are Dword=4 which means that these sites are blocked. That is what Spywareblaster ads in the registry to block domains.
If you use Spywareblaster, you'll see the same in your registry.
So that scanner is not supposed to delete them, but many scanners still do unfortunately. For example Panda Antispyware also flags all entries that Spywareblaster created in the registry to block domains.
If they are indeed set to the trusted zone, they should be present under the O15 entries in Hijackthis. So that's why I am sure these domains are set to the blocked zone... and a scanner is not supposed to delete them.

Poor scanner, so it may be better to explain this to the user.

I suspected something along these lines, which most of us refer to as ghost keys, but explained very well by Miekemoes.

So, perhaps you would like to tell Earthlink what experts think of their scanner, but then if you want to keep your account with them, perhaps not.

My advice is don't bother with that Earthlink Protection Programme. I use Avast, Spyware Blaster and MVPS Hosts, and the only time I get infected is when I do it deliberately from a members infected log.

The HJT log you posted is probablt fine, but as flagged to you before, this line: R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - ~CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
is not fixing normally. So it is probably good advice to have a physical look for it as previously described. The fact that there is no file with it makes it benign and just clutter.

In my last reply to you, I was trying to ascertain what the graphic about webmail was all about.

Also, the centre graphic of the three shows a window with a warning from Web Mail, unfortunately obscured by another window. Where is the warning coming from? What does it say?

I would be interested in your reply to that point, however, if MVPS Hosts has cured it, then let's leave it at that.

HJT doesn't seem to get rid of that one "no name", no biggie. I really think I'm going to love the MVPS Hosts, as that should help keep me clean in the future.

Here's the fix for the recycler problem.

Go to START > RUN > type in cmd > hit ENTER > a DOS window will open with a blinking cursor at the far right. Copy and paste this line in at the cursor (prompt):

del C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-4139845522-522681762-1947647207-500\Dc2.cpl

> hit ENTER.

Did you delete the other two mentioned in that graphic?

They were: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Companion Wizard\compwiz.exe

If not, do so now, you may have to be in safe mode if they refuse to budge in normal mode.

Congratulations! your new log is clean. Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn OFF System Restore.

• On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
• Click Properties.
• Click the System Restore tab.
• Check *Turn off System Restore*.
• Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.

• On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
• Click Properties.
• Click the System Restore tab.
• UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
• Click Apply, and then click OK.

I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

MVPS Hosts file This replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.

SiteAdvisor download this plug-in for your browser and it will alert you of a known bad site for FREE.

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
WINDOWS DEFENDER - With daily updates and scans, this programme offers good security against malware.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programme for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well cause conflicts and slowness.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep your Windows, antispyware and antivirus updated.

I can't tell just by looking at a desktop image or a control panel image.

You can have 100 programmes on your PC if you like but you should only have one from each category running in real time.

My understanding of Earthink Protection Suite is that it is one of these generic security suites given a name by your ISP - they are all over the world. I believe that the one you have is really Authentium software.

The suite may consist of Antivirus scanner, antimalware scanner and firewall, those are the usual ones. That being the case, you cannot have any more of those type of programmes running in real time. You can have all of them on your PC and scan every day if you wish, but they must not run in real time. Effectively, this means that they must not start-up with your PC booting.

If you post a fresh HJT log I can tell you if they are.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

I think I did this before when I reduced your start ups.
