HELP! I have spent about 16 hours trying to get rid of adware/spyware on this laptop. I have in safe mode used AboutBuster, CW Shredder, Cleanup, Ad-awareSE, SpybotS&D, Norton AntiVirus, Killbox, DLLCompare ... and I still have popups that make it almost impossible to use the internet. I suspect the problem might focus on elitetpd32.exe or vivrzi.exe but I have NOT been able to delete either file. I click to get HijackThis to fix those references plus the trusted zone *.frame.crazywinnings.com and *.frame.crazywinnings.com (hklm) but HijackThis doesn't fix them. I am so frustrated! Can anyone HELP?????

Did as you suggested and got some improvement.

Could not find the files named loasmon.exe or jgsstrm.exe. Tried in safe mode using both command prompt and windows explorer -- and all file options for viewing were open including hidden files and system files. Tried again after a regular boot. Just couldn't locate them. Any other ideas on how to find them or is there a chance the Hijack This fix took care of the files themselves?

Could not delete from the trusted zone *.frame.crazywinnings.com. Tried to delete through Hijack This. Also tried to delete using control panel internet settings. Neither method would delete crazywinnings.com from the trusted zone. Any idea on how to get this out of the trusted zone???

HOWEVER I was able to delete vivrzi.exe and elitetpd32.exe. I was too tired to do much more but I did try the internet and did not get bombarded with popups. I'll check out the internet more tomorrow to see how it goes.

I tried to delete everything in the four temporary internet files subdirectories and was startled when each had what was called a system file that could cause problems if I deleted it. It sounds strange to me for a temporary internet file to be a system file. The four files were named 456JODZR, EHIJOHYZ, 1SAJMNYC and 3YZBLWMY -- they seem suspicious names and are suspicious because they resist deletion. I fear that they might bring back the popups. Should I try to delete them or do temporary internet file directories really contain critical system files?

2. Reboot and delete the files.

4. Then post a new Hijackthis log here in a reply. We will clear out temp files when your log is clean anyway.

2. Reboot and delete the files.

C:\WINNT\System32\vivrzi.exe

3. Right click here and select Save As to download WinHelp2002's DelDomains.inf. Please save the file somewhere you can find it like on the desktop. To run the inf file, right click on it and select Install.

4. Then post a new Hijackthis log here in a reply. We will clear out temp files when your log is clean anyway.

Good news ... and bad news. First the good: crazywinnings is gone from the trusted zone. Thank you!

Now the not so good news. No matter how many times, in what sequence and whether in safe mode or not, I cannot keep vivrze.exe to stay deleted. I believe it may be a version of About:Blank (sometimes when I close the popups the words About:Blank appear for a fraction of a second). Someone told me that About:Blank has a hidden file the constantly reinstalls another file. They said the only way to conquer About:Blank is to first delete the hidden file. But I don't know how to discover the name of the hidden file. I also don't know if all this is true or if it applies to the laptop I am trying to get working again. Got any ideas?

2. While in safemode open Hijackthis and click scan. Then tick and fix the following in hijackthis with all windows closed except Hijackthis.

Tired again but vivrzi.exe is quite resiliant. The other two deletes you asked me to make stayed deleted. Do you think this is one of those about:blank deals with the two files ... 1 hidden that generates the obvious file every time the PC is booted?

1. Open HiJackThis. It should open to a "New users quickstart" menu
Click "Open the Misc Tools section"
Click "Delete a file on reboot..."
In the "Enter file to delete on reboot..." window, navigate to:

C:\WINNT\system32\

And select the file

vivrzi.exe

Then click Open. After you click Open, HiJackThis will ask you if you want to restart your computer now. You do, so click Yes.

2. Open Hijackthis again and click scan. Then tick and fix the following in Hijackthis with all windows closed except Hijackthis.

1. Click here to download Pocket Killbox by Option^Explicit. Then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Place the following line (complete path) in bold in the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox, click replace on reboot and use dummy and click the red button with the white X on it after each.

2. Open Hijackthis and click scan. Then tick and fix the following in Hijackthis with all windows closed except Hijackthis.

Progress. Still cannot get rid of the vivrzi.exe reference shown in HijackThis ... BUT the dummy file created in its place by KillBox seems to be stopping the recreation of the vivrzi.exe file. Whatever is driving all of this must look at boot time to see if vivrzi.exe exists. If it does not, it creates vivrzi.exe. So with the dummy file in place it seems to have stopped making a vivrzi.exe at each boot. But it still makes the reference that HiJackThis logs.

One interesting thing: the reboot immediately following the KillBox operation showed three mid-sized boxes that flashed by quickly. The last box referred to vivrzi.exe. The first box referred to something that started with ntvd. I didn't get a chance at the 2nd box. I rebooted a couple of times more but never could see those screens again although the whole desktop screen flashes off and on at just about the same point as I previously saw the boxes.

Another interesting thing. When I tried to bring up Internet Explorer for the first time following the KillBox and reboot, it took a long, long, long time to refresh the screen. Then I closed Internet Explorer and launched it again. This time the screen refreshed in a reasonable time. I didn't stay on long enough to test the popups but they did not appear within the first several minutes.
