• Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
• Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
• By default it will install to C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
• Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
• Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
• Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
• At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch HijackThis.
• Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
• Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
• Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
• DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

That message does not appear anymore. I think it is because I had a music download program called Limewire installed and after I removed it the problem seems to have disappeared.

However I still have pop ups showing and I'd like to get rid of them. Can you help?

One last thing....what filter do I need to have in order to NOT see the ads at .org?

I don't feel comfortable putting the results of the hijack scan here...it's as if my computer is out in the open for all to see. Can this be done some other way?

Hello Bella

The HJT log only shows a snapshot of parts of your registry at a point in time. I have never seen anything that could identify a person, so it is quite anonymous.

I doubt that the infection has gone since Vundo doesn't go very easily, it is more likely growing.

I agree that Limewire is dangerous as are all P2P programmes.

I normally apply the MVPS HOSTS file at the very end of the fix, which will stop you seeing adverts from all and sundry.

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

ALL staff here at Geeks To Go are volunteers, please bear that in mind if I don’t answer your post quickly; I give what time I can.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions! (Click the Options drop down near the upper right of the topic. Select Print this topic.)

You have quite a mixture of malware and Trojans including the dreaded Virtumonde (Vundo) infection. Let’s see what we can do with the first of three fixes, I think.

Firstly could you please disable Windows Defender from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything. Open Windows Defender, click Tools, click Options, under Real-time protection options, clear the Use real-time protection check box, click Save

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
• Click the Scan for Vundo button.
• Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
• You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
• Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
• When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
• Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log, from normal mode, in a reply to this thread.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

If Vundofix does not find and delete the files, please try running it bit differently:

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
• You will receive a message saying Vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK.
• When VundoFix re-opens, click Scan for Vundo button.
• Once the scan is complete, right-click inside the listbox (white box) and click Add more files?
• Copy & paste the 2 entries below into the top 2 boxes:
  • C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\acbsmvc.dll
  • C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\cvmsbca.*
  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\vefvhegg.dll
  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\ggehvfev.*
• Click Add Files and click Close Window.
• Click the Remove Vundo button.
• You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES.
• Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
• When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
• Turn your computer back on.
• Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a fresh HiJackThis log, from normal mode.

Ok I ran VundoFix. Computer rebooted, all seems well for now. Did not get the messages saying I have a virus.

Do I need to open Defender again and check Real time protection options back again?

The log had only two files listed.
