Hey guys. In again for a problem on another friend's computer. This time it's an interesting issue that I've never seen before, and even after Google'ing it, I'm still clueless. He's running a program called MAS (developed by the company I work for) for his martial arts school. The program is built in Visual Basic 6, in case anyone's wondering.

Anyways, he called into our tech support line, with a totally weird issue. The program is built in several different 'modules', and whenever he jumps from one module to another (from 'Contacts' to 'Store'), the application freezes up, and will not accept any kind of input. It does *not* switch to 'Not Responding', just refuses to accept input. When the focus in Windows is shifted to another application (like IE), and then back to MAS, it works fine again.

Originally, we thought this might be an issue with the program. And we couldn't replicate it. So we decided it might be an issue with his computer. The weirdest thing was, while running CCleaner on his computer, the same issue occurred. When jumping between the 'Scan' and 'Issues' modules, CCleaner freezes until focus is shifted away, and then back to, the application.

I saw some pretty shifty stuff get deleted when we ran the full clean of his system, so I decided to throw a HiJackThis log up for you super-smart people, to see if you can see anything that we may have missed and/or the reason this issue is happening!

You do have some suspicious entries in that log. I also notice that you're running AVG Free as the anti-virus program, but I see signs of Symantec/Norton installed. Was Norton once the anti-virus program on here, and are there any Norton products still being used? Two antivirus programs can cause conflicts on the PC, including with applications.

I'd like you to run the following program for me:

1. Download ComboFix.exe using either of these links:

* bleepingcomputer.com

* techsupportforum.com

2. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log & a fresh HJT log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Please post the combofix log and a new hijackthis log.

I apologize for the delay - since it had been over 2 weeks since I had responded, you dropped out of my subscriptions and I didn't realize you had replied.

I really don't see anything in the log now except for the 2 anti-virus programs. I've seen some odd things happen when there are two AVs running on a PC, and I'd like to see if uninstalling one fixes the problem. I'm not sure which of the two you intend to keep, although I would recommend the AVG Free.

If you decide to remove the Norton, please go to this link, which is for their automated removal tool. Norton doesn't uninstall easily. When you're down to one AV, post a new log for me and let me know how things are doing, and we'll go from there.

Also, I tried to get him to boot into safe mode, to see if the issue was still a problem when running minimal specs. The computer froze at the login screen when it booted into safe mode, which also seemed to take an unusually long time (ie, 3 minute wait between hitting Enter to boot to safe mode, and the file list starts scrolling). Upon getting to the login screen in Safe Mode and clicking a user name to log in, Windows promptly freezes.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but if there's one thing a Windows machine should be able to do, it's boot into Safe Mode. Does this set off any alarm bells?

Let's try running AVG Anti-spyware. I'm not sure why you're not getting into safe mode. I don't see anything in combofix that would be causing problems.


First download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program

• Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
• Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
• On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
  • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
• Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
• Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
• Under "Reports"
  • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
  • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"

Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

• Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
  IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
• Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
• Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
• AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  Once the scan is complete do the following:
• If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
• Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
• Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
• Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the AVG Anti-Spyware report scan.
