Thanks for those suggestions Keith.
I might try Mesh - there was a second disk which came with the pc 'Disk 2 Windows ME Drivers'
though it simply has the exact same contents as the Recovery Disk, plus extra files which look to be Video & Modem drivers.

I may well go down the Malware removal route too....
