eratic mouse and not clicking

Does anyone know of a virus or something that wouls affect my mouse? First off, the batteries are brand new and I have never had this problem until 2 days ago. The mouse movement is very eratic, slow and choppy. When clicking on icons, sometimes I have to click 2 or 3 time for it to work. Other times, it justs highlights the icon and wont click it or it just makes the icon look like it is being depressed, when really it is not. Other times, as I am dragging mouse around the screen, it starts to highlight text and stuff when I am not clicking mouse at all? It also seems like I have to double click a lot of things that I should normally have to click once.

Any ideas?
