Hi,

I found a thread regarding a similar malware problem as mine. But the thread has since closed. However, I have read through some of it and am posting the 3 logs that were requested in the 2nd post.

Note: when I tried to save the uninstall manager list, HJT terminated without any messages. This happened 3 times (I restarted HJT and tried it again). Because of this I will only be able to post the HJT log and the smitfraudfix log.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Mr Tumnus
Welcome to Geeks to go

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

1.
Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

2.
From normal windows I need you to rename Hijackthis.exe and call it Hijack.exe, resan with it and post the log, also try to create an uninstall list.

Hi Mr Tumnus

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

1.
We need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
*choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
*uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
*Close the window with ok
*All hidden files will now be visible

Click This link for further help.

2.
Please go here to upload a suspicious file for analysis.
  • Enter your username from this forum
  • Copy and paste the link to this thread
  • Browse for this filename: C:\WINDOWS\system32\ipxlog.dll
  • In the comments, please mention that I asked you to upload this file
  • Click on Send File
3.
Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log along with the Vundofix log in this same topic, and let me know how your system's working.

Hi, below are 2 logs

-VundoFix Log,
-HJT log.

Note, that when I clicked on remove vundo button, it began the process, the screen flickered a bit, then the computer rebooted without a prompt. After reboot, I ran the HJT (Vundo didn't restart), producing the posted log. As for how the system's working, it seems fine at the moment, however, task manager indicates an IExplore.exe SYSTEM process (currently using about 17660 K) that when terminated, reinitializes on its own (no IE windows are open). Thanks again for your help.

Tried that again. Screen went blank after removal prompt and computer rebooted without further prompt. IExplore.exe still runs. Doscan.exe does too (not sure what this is too).

Thanks.

Hi Mr Tumnus

Congratulations, you are the owner of a new variant of Vundo  the creator of Vundofix is looking into this and is in the process of updating the tool, I will post back as soon as it is complete.

Please be patient

Atribune works quick

Delete the version of Vundofix that you have, DOWNLOAD this version and run it again, post back with the results and a new HJT log.

Hi Andy.

Thanks again for your help. I really appreciate it :whistling:

Anyways, as per your instructions, I deleted the old version of vundofix an downloaded the new version and ran it. This time, the program paused a little bit longer before rebooting. (The screen seemed to flicker just before reboot). On this reboot I went into safe mode and ran Vundo fix again. This time the scan was able to remove some elements, but asked to remove some via rebooting. So I rebooted back into safe mode, scanned (this took about 1 to 2 hours this time), and deleted the files it could (after prompt), then asked me to reboot to remove elements that could not at the time. So I rebooted out of safe mode into normal mode and it came up just as i logged in. I clicked on the button to remove the elements, and it rebooted a second or two later (might have done stuff). Checking the task manager, I still found an anomalous instance of Iexplore.exe running...

Thanks again for your help.

Hi Mr Tumnus

I need some more files submitting to Upload Malware.com

same process as before but with the following files...

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssttr.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmp4.tmp.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\yayvwts.dll
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\svchost.exe

Hi Andy,

For some reason, the problem got worse and one morning when I was booting up my computer it just kept on rebooting before it was able to fully load windows. When I disabled the option to reboot on system failure (via f8) the computer said there was an error in the winlogon.exe file and it couldn't load. So I had to reinstall windows. Since then everything has been fine; I've downloaded/installed avg (grisoft), spyblaster, and zonealarm; heard about them through another member of this site) and have since reinstalled adaware/spybot.

After all this, I appreciate the excellent effort and help you've provided in this thread.

Thanks,
Mr. T

Sorry to hear that you had to reinstall :whistling:

The programs you have installed are good, as an extra bit of security I would recommend downloading AVG Antispyware, it is free for 30 days after which it will stop monitoring in realtime, it can still be used as an on demand spyware scanner, you will need to update and run it manually.

Also run this frequently, ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.
