Hi,
I have had this database working 100% untill recently I got a 'cant connect' error. I called 1&1, my host provider, and they said they had a prob with their sql server(s) and it will be sorted out soon. Now when I register on the website I get the error Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)1 I've looked this up http://dev.mysql.com...-to-server.html
but cant understand why this error should occur. The .sock file suggests to me that this is something they have set up incorrectly.
To make things worse, when they (1&1) log onto the website they can register completely and its added to the database, however, I can only get that error - tried both IE and Firefox - have deleted all cookies, fliles, hist etc from both - same result.

Is this something they should be sorting out or is this something I can do something about? ? ?

Large hosts like 1&1 use shared database servers that are independent of the http (web) servers. In this case it looks like the database server was not accessible (likely down), but the web server is working, so you get the error.
