.cda files were attached to an email a relative sent me. I can't seem to open them. From what I read a .cda file is a short cut to a certain song on a cd. Do I have to have the actual cd to convert these attachments to mp3 or wav files so I can open them? Or can I convert these file attachments to .mp3 or .wav files thru windows media player. If I can convert them how?

You are right, a .cda file is no more than a representation of, or shortcut to, an actual music track. When you double-click it, it needs the source cd to be able to play it.
You can't convert them either since there's nothing to convert, they are only shortcuts.

You will have to ask your relative to convert the cd tracks to MP3 files before he sends them to you.
