I did something really really stupid and need help. I installed an antivirus program named AVAST and ran it. It asked permission to delete the following files (registry keys?) WIN32:sma11-ADV WIN32:startpage-216- it also put some other files into a file I can no longer access. My computer is now a mess! I can't access internet and it freezes with minimal activity... HELP!!!

Try starting in safe mode (tap F8 continually as soon as turn PC on, then choose "safe mode"). Windows will look strange (low resolution) but you should be able to run System Restore and choose a date before you installed Avast.

I'm surprised with your problem. I've installed it on 4 machines and it's working perfectly.
