I got the c000021a BSOD and could only start using XP CD. In Recovery Console, I did chkdsk /r and some errors were repaired, but this didn't fix it. I uninstalled KB929338 and that didn't fix it (and, after I finally got into Safe Mode and could read the logs, the last thing the computer did was install KB929338, which requires a reboot, so I am highly suspicious of this particular update).

So I did a Repair Install, and several errors occured, the popups:

Title bar: COM+ Setup Error
sub-component COM+ raised an exception while processessing the OC_COMPLETE_INSTALLATION set up message.
d:\nt\com\com1x\src\complussetup\comsetup\csetuputil.cpp (line 3406)
Error code = 0x8007007f
The specified procedure could not be found.
Failed to load the library 'C:\windows\system32\catsrv.dll'

I clicked OK, it went back to installing.

Then, while registering components, I got four errors, one right after the other, and all
Title bar: Windows Update
an error occurred loading "path and name"
The file may not have been installed or it has been corrupted.
for these files
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\directdb.dll"
"C:\Windows\System32\inetcomm.dll"
"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msoe.dll"
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\wab32.dll"

I clicked OK, it finished. I restarted the computer and it hung on the Windows XP screen.

I can start in safe mode (but not with networking). It takes a while--about 5 minutes. It looks like it hangs but it does go into Safe Mode.

My question is--what should I do now? I am wondering if the problem with the repair install is my Dell Reinstallation CD, because the first error hints there is an error with a file on the CD-drive d during the install. Or is the problem with the harddrive and I'm looking at a full re-install (which I am hoping not to have to do but....). Or, perhaps both.

I copied the SETUPERR.LOG below and have the SETUPLOG.TXT, but it is >500k, so I have attached a trimmed version, in which I cut out lines of file operations that were not flagged as problems.

Info on the machine: 2002 vintage OptiPlex GX260T, 2.4GHz, 1G (2x512, 266MHz), 40GB EIDE. Had been giving no trouble.

Any help or advice greatly appreciated.

The SETUPERR.LOG:

do a full re-install or recovery (not repair). If problems persist I suspect the hard disk is failing. Buy a new one and re-install.
