Wise people,

I am in awe of some fo the posts here and the success you are having diagnosing people's malware problems.

Me: I get 'dropped' from my DSL connection after about 15 minutes. This started happening two weeks ago.

The crude fix I use is to hit the power button to my modem. This seems to reset things for another 15 minutes. SBC Global techs pinged me. Solid connection on their end.

I downloaded and ran all of the fix-it items suggested. I had a "mochi.exe" problem that was fixed, now i keep getting download.apropro.exe warnings from AVG.

I run updated adaware, ccleaner, norton AV, and spyware doctor.

here's my log. i notice it says i am running IE 6 with SP1. Each time I go to Microsoft to downloan SP2 it scanns and says there are no current downloads.

  • Once the definitions have been updated:

    • "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion."
    • "During removal, unload explorer and IE if necessary"
    • "Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot."
    • "Delete quarrantined objects after restoring"
  • Click on "Safety Settings" and select "Write-protect system files after repair (Hosts file, etc)"
  • Click on "Proceed" to save these Preferences.
  • Click on the "Scan Now" button on the left.
  • Under "Select Scan Mode, be sure to select "Use Custom Scanning Options".
• Close all programs except ad-aware.
• Click on "Next" in the bottom right corner to start the scan.
• Run the Ad-Aware scan and allow it to remove everything it finds and then REBOOT - Even if not prompted to.
• After you log back in, Ad-Aware may run to finalize the scan and remove any locked files that it may of found. Allow it to finish.

Please delete your temporary files. Double Click My Computer (WinXP: Navigate to Start --->My Computer)
You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the
bottom of the fly out window. One the very first tab (General) you will see a button labeled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.
Make sure the following are checked:
Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin
Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic.

FYI, Spyware Doctor is a program I downloaded ($29.95) a month ago. I guess I need to remove it?? I checked it in HJT and it reappears in this newest log.

Also: I have system restore stopped. Right?

Whatever is bugging my computer causes a number of warnings on my event log related to TCP/IP and Winsock 2 things... I think. Anyway the result is a disconnect from my DSL after 10 minutes or so.

ALSO: I keep trying to automatic update my computer through MS to get SP2 and its says "all programs are up to date" ALTHOUGH I do not see SP2 anywhere. I plan to call the MS support free line tonight.

Thanks for the worm info. I did everything you suggested, HOWEVER:

I did not find the following in the running processes thingy:

C:\windows\software distribution\download... blah blah

You advised me to do the cntrl-alt-del thing and disable that.

I DID find the "software distribution" folder in the WINDOWS file and I deleted it in safe mode. I could not delete the file in normal mode because I got the error... "application in use by another program, blah blah."

I followed your advice and uninstalled Norton Antivirus. I'll use AVG.

OK, I appreciate your attention again. I'll heap high praise on you to whomever when we are through.

Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.

It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks. Click Here to make sure that you have the latest patches for Windows.

These next two steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection.
1. Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness. We usually recommend FireFox .
2. Install Sun's Java. It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine .

It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder if everything is working okay.

After doing all these, your system will be thoroughly protected from future threats.
