If vista is in sleep mode, will it still perform virus scan, etc.??

If the hard drive is asleep, no. All programs stop, and a restore profile is made, allowing you to pick up where you left off. However, while the drive is asleep, it is effectively powered off, meaning no processes of any kind will be running.
