formatting disks?

so I bought this disk @ school.

an unformatted high density 3.5 disk.

I am trying to save my paper on it, to bring the disk to school, to print out my paper there.

someone told me I needed to format it, and I followed the steps.. each time I get a windows thing telling me it cannot complete the format.

help! I have an emachine with windows XP on it.
