Hi Guys, I wonder if you can please help me, my relatively new Sony Vaio runs like a sick dog, its so unbelievably slow.

These are the syptoms, every time it starts I get a message pop up again and again and again, I might have to shut it 20x before it finally goes away. It says

Generic host process for Win32 services - to help protect your computer windows has closed a program

then I get the dialog box asking me if I want to send the error report or not. If I view the erorr rep. its the same every time and reads:

This process repeats as I said before over and over again, maybe 20x.

After this has happened it runs somewhat normally but then I noticed a dir. called

C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\ERRORREP\UserDumps

Just continually gets filled up with hundreds and sometimes thousands of the files like:

the second file is 3mb, there is sometimes so many of them that the computer runs out of disk space, they seem to get written to that folder every 10mins or so.

I followed all the steps listed in teh FAQ's and could find no viruses etc.

Okay, I just had a look at what came with the Vaio and in a booklet entitiled 'Recovery Guide' it looks like the computer didn't ship with a XP CD and the recovery CD was meant to be made by the end user - which I didn't.

However there is a 'recovery drive' containing recovery files and tools on the harddrive and a utility to access this.

Also I do have a couple of XP CD's here - does that help?

Run what you can of this, when you run sfc /scannow use the XP CD's you have, though it may say none are suitable / correct

Items in blue which are underlined are clickable to give more information about the process

Click start then run, type prefetch then press enter, click edit then select all, right click any file then click delete, confirm delete

Click start, all programmes, accessories, system tools to run disc clean up, then from system tools, run disc defragmenter.

Click start then run, type sfc /scannow then press enter, you need the XP CD

Windows File Protection will show a blue onscreen progress bar, when the bar goes, reboot

If you do not have an XP CD you can borrow a same version as was originally installed XP CD, if you downloaded SP2 then you need an SP1 XP CD

Download and install Tune Up 2007 Trial

Run Tune Up Disc Clean Up

Run Tune Up Registry Clean Up

Click Optimize and Improve to run Reg Defrag, which will take a few minutes and need a reboot. You should disable the antivirus programme to run this

Check the anti virus is running after the reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to optimize the computer, select computer with an internet connection from the drop down menu, this also requires a reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to accelerate downloads, select the speed just above your actual connection speed, this requires a reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to run system advisor

Hi Keith - thanks for the help so far, I have carried out your instructions word for word...there were 114 files in the prefetch, the scannow ran without issue and the registry cleaner fixed 732 issues. Unfortunately though the issues still is unresolved! :-/

Do you have further suggestions as to what I try now?

Does the laptop have an XP product key on it

The scan did not ask for a CD and just ran to conculsion - I don't believe that the lappie has a product key on it as nowhere in the litrature that came with it have a seen any hardcopy - is there an easy way to tell?

You will need a same version CD as is installed on the laptop, and to use the product key on the laptop, not from the borrowed CD.

Run this, if it deviates from the guide at all, exit

You can use this guide to repair XP

Possibly, you will need to press the power button and keep tapping the delete key, (possibly F2) until the PC enters set up. Change the boot order to CD ROM Drive then hard drive, press F10 then press enter, load the XP CD then type Y then press enter, as it reboots, look for press any key to load from CD, press enter

You will need your XP product key to complete this

The XP Product Key is a 25 character alpha numerical code, which does not include the sequence OEM

If you have audio / video files which are subject to DRM you should check with the provider for known issues with performing an XP repair install
