Black laptop screen/monitor

HP ze5300 laptop. I did a disk check. When I came back after it was done, the screen was completely black. I have tried re-booting, and the screen remains black. However, I know the unit does work, since I accessed it through a remote program on my desktop, and the laptop works fine--can see everything from my desktop, but still cannot see anything on the laptop screen/monitor.
