I recently bought a 1GB stick of RAM, branded Simtec.

I tried installing it today but it was only recognised as a 32mb stick and won't boot up at all with my existing 256mb sticks of RAM.

All sticks are PC2700. My motherboard can take up to 2GB ram and either single or double sided. (Motherboard: MSI 845PE Max Series, Socket: 478, for Intel P4 processor)

I've tried upgrading my BIOS to version 4.0, but it still won't recognise the stick at a 1GB, and won't boot up with my old 256mb stick. I disabled quick boot to see if it would recognise it on start up, and still no.

I've also tested the stick in another machine and its recognised as a 1GB stick.

Any ideas/help would be appreciated.

How's the memory speed? Is it compatible with your motherboard?

It could also be a bad stick. They are Mass Produced. It could just be that it came out bad.

Speed is PC2700/333 which is what my current sticks are and my motherboard can take up to PC2700.

Problem with it being a dodgy stick is that it worked in another computer without any problems :/

I don't know why it wouldn't work.. did you check your device manager when you installed it? It may need to be recognised after you boot-up

well there could be a number of reason for this behavour i ahve a stick of 256mb ddr 400 pc3200 that works in my pc wont in my friends intel and wont in my other pc with the same processor and same motherboard as the 1 it works in only differance is bios version, i dont know how much u know or how cinfident you are but id consider taking the bios update route if u r confident and another thing check that ur motherboard doesnt have the dual channell feature and if it does u r not setting it up in such a way that would enable this feature.

I've already flashed/updated the BIOS - no luck.

Went through BIOS options, and all seems to be in order. will have a look for what you mentioned when I next boot.

my friends pc is running AMD whilst I'm running Intel, perhaps that could cause a problem in mine? :/

Its possible. But I don't think that will turn out to be your problem. Try placing the Ramm in another computer with the same components as yours.
