Windows needs to know what program to use to open the file type. Control Panel>Folder Options>File Types.
Scroll down the list until you come to the file type involved. Left click once to highlight. Then choose "Advanced."
A short list of suggested programs will be offered. If the one you want isn't there, "New" and "Browse" to the .exe you want to use. Once selected, the "Set default" button puts it into action. OK your way out.
This is also the way to change which program opens various file types.
