I get this stupid little popup with the System Alert: [email protected] notice.
Then if I click on it thinking it's my AVG telling me I have a virus it's an ad to get rid of Spyware.
But I think it actually is the spyware.
Grrrrr.

Something called Pestcontrol.

Here's my HiJack This file:

Hi TaraLeigh75

Welcome to GTG! :whistling:

* Please post an uninstall list for me using the HijackThis Uninstall Manager:
  • Open HijackThis and click on the Open the Misc Tools section button.
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click the Save List button.
  • After you click the "Save List" button, you will be asked where to save the file.
  • Pick a place to save it then the list should open in notepad.
  • Copy and paste that list in your next reply to this thread.
Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Come back to this thread and post the Uninstall list and the log from the Smitfraudfix

** Open the HijackThis Uninstall Manger and select this entry:

Windows Safety Alert

Click on the "Edit Uninstall Command" ans copy what is there. Paste that info back here in your next reply please.

* Go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall Viewpoint Media Player.

* Update AVG Anti-Spyware:
  • On the main screen click on the "Update now" link and the update should begin immediately.
    • If the update does not begin, select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • When the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
  • If you cannot download the updates, update manuallly according to the directions here.
  • If you do the manual update, look under "Full database" and click the "Download now" button.
  • DO NOT run a scan yet. You will do that later in safe mode.
* Click here for info on how to boot to safe mode if you don't already know how.

* Now copy these instructions to notepad and save them to your desktop. You will need them to refer to.

* Restart your computer into safe mode now. Perform the following steps in safe mode:

* Run AVG Anti-Spyware:
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • It will then begin the scanning process, be patient it may take a while for the scan to complete.
  • When the scan is complete, you must select an action.
  • Select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen
  • Save the report as a text file and save it to your desktop.
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware.
* Run the Smitfraudfix:

Still in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with the results of the AVG-Antispyware scan.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Thanks! :whistling:

After you have carried out those last directions and come back here to post those logs, please save a new uninstall list and post it too. I want to see if the Smitfraudfix removes that entry from Add/Remove programs.

Much Better!
I don't think I have anything left going on. No crazy popups and the system is running nice and fast now.
Thanks so much for your help.

You're Welcome! :whistling:

* If I had you use Killbox to delete any files, go ahead and delete the C:\!Killbox folder then empty the Recycle Bin.

* Check this out for info on how to tighten your security settings and some good free tools to help prevent this from happening again.

* Go to Windows update and install all "High Priority Updates".

* Now turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click "Properties".
Click the "System Restore" tab.
Put a check by "Turn off System Restore on all drives".
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn System Restore back on and create a restore point.

To turn System Restore back on:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click "Properties".
Click the "System Restore" tab.
Remove the check by "Turn off System Restore on all drives".
Click Apply, and then click OK.

To create a restore point:

Single-click "Start" and point to "All Programs".
Mouse over "Accessories", then "System Tools", and select "System Restore".
In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a restore point" and click the "Next" button.
Type a description for your new restore point. Something like "After trojan/spyware cleanup". Click "Create" and you're done.
