Recently, my computer has started to run slow, really S-L-O-W! Besides that, when my computer goes to my screensaver while I'm away, when I return and move my mouse to get it back it first gives me the BLUE SCREEN for about 30-35 seconds with the timer, then it goes to the WINDOWS SIGN IN SCREEN where I have to click on my user name, then it takes another 30-35 seconds before I get back to where I was.

I thought maybe my NORTON INTERNET SECURITY had something to do with conflicting with my SPYWARE DOCTOR, so I uninstalled Norton but I'm still having trouble. Sometimes I can here the hard drive spinning, not sure if that has anything to do with anything.

Any ideas? I've googled key words but can't find anything at all.

Please be gentle - I'm electronically challenged and really don't understand much of the ins and outs or lingo of computers. Like a car, I can put gas and drive it, but not much more.

Click start, all programmes, accessories, system tools to run disc clean up, then from system tools, run disc defragmenter.

Click start then run, type sfc /scannow then press enter, you need the XP CD

Windows File Protection will show a blue onscreen progress bar, when the bar goes, reboot

If you do not have an XP CD you can borrow a same version as was originally installed XP CD, if you downloaded SP2 then you need an SP1 XP CD

Download and install Tune Up 2007 Trial

Run Tune Up Disc Clean Up

Run Tune Up Registry Clean Up

Click Optimize and Improve to run Reg Defrag, which will take a few minutes and need a reboot. You should disable the antivirus programme to run this

Check the anti virus is running after the reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to optimize the computer, select computer with an internet connection from the drop down menu, this also requires a reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to accelerate downloads, select the speed just above your actual connection speed, this requires a reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to run system advisor

I don't have the original CD that I can remember and I don't know anyone who does.

I have SP1, had downloaded SP2 years ago but deleted it due to major problems it caused.

Am I able to do any of the steps that you wrote above without the CD or do I have to wait to find one?

With what I described, can you tell me what's happened, and if the above has helped others in the past with the same situation?

The only step above that you will not be able to preform is the sfc /scannow that is the only one that requires the XP CD

Thanks, I'll give all I'm able to a try and see how it goes. Can anyone tell me WHY this has happened? I'm trying to learn along with way, if possible.

Okay, I'm seeing a few things happening here, one is that I keep getting an error from IE. Once was earlier today when I tried to go to a page in Overstocks website, and just now, when logging on to AOL, I wanted to click on a news story - the page fully loaded in the background but then I got an error message that says:

INTERNET EXPLORER CANNOT OPEN THE INTERNET SITE http://news........

OPERATION ABORTED then click on OK

When I clicked on OK I got the usual error page when a site doesn't load but when I reloaded it, it came up, without the error.

Is this normal after doing the prefetch delete? I haven't had time to do anything but that and defrag

Prefetch shouldn't cause it, see how Tune Up does
