I was given a laptop computer with windows 98se. I am trying to connect it to our wireless network for the kids. When I try to install the software for the Linksys WPC54G Notebook Adapter, it informs me that it needs ie5.5 to run. Problem is it only has ie5.0. The laptop only has the telephone jack and we do not have dial up to connect to do the upgrade. When trying to run ie5 setup from a disk, it trys to connect to the internet for installation sites. How can I upgrade without a connection to the internet?

About the only thing you can do is download the whole ie6.0 file and burn it to a CD, not the installer which is only 480kb, but the full 15mb or so installation file.

You can go to Microsoft's "Download Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1" page, download it and burn it to disk. Then you will not have to download again if you have to reinstall 98.
Microsoft also allows you to order a CD if you do not want to download.

Thanks. I was able to download full versions of ie5.5 and 6.0 at greenapple.com. That did the trick. I am now up and running. Windows 98 is slow, but my son says, "slow internet is better than no internet." Thanks for the advice

Mom sounds like a practical woman. Nice to her everything is working out. If I may ask what are the specs on that computer? Make, model, processor, RAM,..?
