It does the same thing when I run that "prefetch" program. Screen blanks to wallpaper for a few seconds then the Desktop returns, no program launched. Now what that I can't run "prefetch"?

Hi DocR.
Have you ever tried Mozilla Firefox
for your browser instead of Internet Explorer?
(I can use either by clicking on the desktop icon.)
I like it SO MUCH better.....it is a free download.
There is a new revised one....I will find it and post it here.
It would not be solving your IE problem but it might be a way to work around it.
Just a thought.
P.S. I am not even sure if amateurs are allowed to post 'advice'.

Ok Keith. That sfc /scannow completed then went away. Now what?

Thanks Flowergirl. Already use Pocket Firefox with my Portable Flashdrive on other computers that I use.

DocR.
I was looking for the free MF download on my SLOW computer
while you were posting.
I don't know what 'pocket' Firefox means?
Since I found the free download, I will go ahead and post it:
MOZILLA FIREFOX FREE DOWNLOAD
MF even has built in spell check.
It will even show misspelled words as we post here.
(All we have to do is right click on the word and different choices
of spelling that word will appear!)
And I haven't been logged off of Geeks in MONTHS by using Firefox.
I am not even sure if I remember my password it has been so long.
And my computer has been shut completely off many times.
I lost it often using IE.
Janie

Just letting you know flowergirl, explorer.exe has nothing to do with internet explorer, and DocR's problem also has nothing to do with internet explorer.

Did you install any updates or programs just before this occurred? If so try System Restore to a point previous to the problem.
Explorer.exe doesn't start
Explorer.exe doesn't start
Optionally from within Task manager, from New Task enter CMD At the Command Prompt enter:
COPY C:\Windows\System32\dllcache\explorer.exe C:\windows\explorer.exe

Thanks, S.
I need to hang around here more because I learn SO MUCH.
I just assumed Explorer had to do with Internet Explorer.
Thanks for the lesson.
Janie I still like Mozilla Firefox the best.

Keith,
Still same problem after reboot.
Whiskeyman,
Tried old restore point also. That made no difference.
Any other ideas?

You can use this guide to repair XP
Possibly, you will need to press the power button and keep tapping the delete key, (possibly F2) until the PC enters set up. Change the boot order to CD ROM Drive then hard drive, press F10 then press enter, load the XP CD then type Y then press enter, as it reboots, look for press any key to load from CD, press enter
You will need your XP product key to complete this
The XP Product Key is a 25 character alpha numerical code, which does not include the sequence OEM
If you have audio / video files which are subject to DRM you should check with the provider for known issues with performing an XP repair install
Click this to view the XP Repair Install Guide
Windows XP repair feature won't delete your data, installed programs, personal information, or settings. It just repairs the operating system
The XP repair install will look and run as a normal install, however, you must not see a request to format the drive
After running XP Repair you will need to install all Windows Updates
Microsoft Update
