I download stuff now and then and instead of running to this siet whenever I think I have a mess load of spyware, how can tell what to get rid of?

You can use programs that remove spyware automatically like Ad-ware and Spybot S&D. Using more advanced tools like Hijack This should be left to the experts, it takes hundres of log, and many, many hours to read them well.
