Is it possible for me to have a music player embedded in my webpage, from which people can play songs from a selected playlist of songs, and would disallow them from downloading the songs?

The answer is no, I don't believe it would be possible, because for the person to play a song they have to download it first. It is a best a contradiction and hence imposable.

Hate to mention the site, but MySpace pages use an embedded player with multiple song selections. Their setup is not the norm though. There are some JavaScripts which will embed a player and provide a drop down menu for different song selections. As for keeping anyone from downloading your songs, pretty hard to keep stuff hidden from anyone who really wants something off your page.
