Suspected Malware Infection

My son brought his computer home from college and upon starting it I found that it was impossibly slow. You could only click on one program at a time. The computer would come to a standstill. To access google and type in a search term, after 15 minutes, no web sites were returned for the term. I was able to run adaware at a very slow pace, but it completed eventually and found many infections. I removed them and the computer functioned normally. I thought I had resolved the issue, but when I had to restart the computer, the original problem resurfaced. I didn't run a hijack this log yet. Can you help?

Hello and welcome to GeeksToGo!

I am logreeval and will be helping you clean your computer. :whistling:

* Click here to download HJTsetup.exe
  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hi

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete these folders (if present):

C:\Program Files\DR_S
C:\PROGRAM\COMMON FILES\wowm

Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete these files (if present):

C:\WINDOWS\itual.exe

After that, Reboot.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.

Hi. I followed your instructions and ran a fresh HijackThis log. I also have a question. When this computer boots up, the C:\Windows folder opens. It says under details that the folder is hidden. How can I change the folder so it doesn't open upon booting and also that it is not hidden?

No worries :whistling:

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AOL Instant Messengar] C:\WINDOWS\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

The folder shouldn't open up upon start up now. :blink:

Please tell me how it goes/how the computer is running and give me one final HijackThis log.

I followed your instructions and the computer is running much faster. The Windows folder no longer opens upon boot up. Here is my last HijackThis log.

Congratulations! You are clean :whistling:

Now that you are clean of all malware, there are a few steps I need you to complete:

I need you to re-hide files/folders, to do this:
  • Click Start.
  • Click My Computer.
  • Open the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNCHECK Show hidden files and folders.
  • Now, CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Defrag your Hard Drive, to do this:
  • Click Start>> Run>> Type Compmgmt.msc.
  • Click Disk Defragmenter.
  • Click the volume that you want to defragment(Usually C:) and then click Defragment.
Now, you need to clear your restore points. Here is a tutorial on how-to.

The following are some tips to prevent future infection:

Anti-Spyware Scanners are important to have, I recommend you scan at least once every 2 weeks:
AVG Antispyware
A-Squared Antispyware

Real Time Anti-Spyware Programs protect you in Real-Time, not just scan after you infected, they are nice to have to prevent infections:
SpywareGuard
SpywareBlaster
SpywareTerminator

Internet Explorer is not the most secure browser available. I recommend using one of these browsers:
Firefox
Opera
*NOTE*If you keep Internet Explorer, here is a link to tighten up the security of Internet Explorer.

It is important to clear out temporary files, many types of malware hide in the temp, here are some programs to clear out the temp folders:
CCleaner
ATF Cleaner

Windows Update is a very important thing to do. It contains critical security patches for Internet Explorer and Windows.
