I am trying to use the Backup utility that is built into Windows XP. I run the utility by right-clicking my hard drive, going to the Tools tab and clicking the Backup button. I choose the option to backup all files on the drive. When it starts to create the backup, I get the following error message: "The files for the recovery diskette could not be created. The operation was aborted."

Information that may be required to help in solving this issue:

Gateway MX6440 Notebook
Windows XP Home Edition with SP2
The hard drive was completely erased and XP was reinstalled before attempting this procedure.
This operation did not work before the re installation of Windows either.
Windows XP was installed using the Recovery Disk that came with the computer.
I am trying to save the backup to an external hard drive.

If there is some other free program that will do the job exactly like the Windows Backup Utility does, then please let me know. I am attempting to backup all files and all of my settings as well. Please help me if you can. I am willing to provide any more information that is needed. Thank you!

According to that article it says:

APPLIES TO
• Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard x64 Edition
• Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition (32-bit x86)

Also, in the Solution it mentions using Ftonline.exe. According to this site, Ftonline.exe is only available in Windows Server 2003.

Sorry. you are right. Download SyncBack fro here. It's a free, easy to use synchronization and backup tool.

I am a big NTBackup fan personally.

If you go to start -> run -> type: ntbackup

hit enter

Now if it doesnt start in wizard mode go to Tools -> Backup Wizard

Select back up everything on my computer, pick a place to save it and run it.

Let me know exactly what the error is, if you get one.

I have downloaded and used SyncBack and it works great, so thank you for that. As for Ntbackup, the wizard mode still gives me an error message but I tried the same backup in Advanced mode and it worked fine.
