Well, my trusty desktop PC gave up the ghost, so I'm investing in a new rig.

I've got some doubts though, I'm not super savvy when it comes to computer hardware. Was wondering if you guys could check out these components and let me know if they'll make a good system.

I want to use the SATA hard drive as my primary drive and I'd also like to hook my old hard drive up to get some of my information back (though I've heard if they have XP installed on them, they hate Vista).

I'm also adding two more sticks of 512 and 256 DDR RAM from the desktop and the old DVD drive.

I don't expect much in the way of problems, but any input from you guys is appreciated.

For the DVD drive, look into SATA, not ATA/IDE.

I wouldn't trust that PSU with that high end graphics card. Speaking of which, wait till the end of may on the graphics card if you can. ATI is releasing thier new DX10 cards, even if you don't like ATI, competition should drive the prices down.

That processor will bottleneck your graphics card, meaning it won't perform as well as it could with better hardware.

That alot for the floppy drive, are you sure you really need that 7 in 1 drive.

Also I really go against 64bit vista (very little driver support), get the 32bit version.

I really recommend that you keep your old case and then get a different higher end motherboard and CPU. I'd go with the AM2 and at least 4200+ for best performance, but if you went this route you'd have to get new (DDR2) RAM. Whats you budget?

Well... I got some questions about those suggestions.

I'm quite happy with a computer of this price for what it gives... I'm not lookin to go much over 1500.

What will this new graphics card cost me?

And will it be a giant loss of performance from that processor?

Same as what your paying but with a possibility of greater performance. But till we see benchmarks we won't know for sure. Like I said, competition brings prices down, so you might as well wait.
At 1500$CND or a bit less you should be able to get MUCH better then that.
There won't be a significant performance drop, but why buy something that won't be able to perform at it's peak?

Ya forget the SATA drive, I thought they were cheaper that what they really are.
I suggest you checking out www.NCIX.com
You can save 10$ if you purchase your operating system there.
Unless you plan on overclocking that fan is overkill, if you do plan on overclocking your going to need better ram.
Since the Hard drive and the DVD-rom Drive are OEM, your going to need connectors as OEM drives don't come with.
This ram is better and cheaper, also it's less likely that you'll have problems with dual channel.

Alright, I chose the RAM and the motherboard.

I scrapped the OEM drives and went for some retail ones.

Hopefully these are all well and good, this is bloody $500 more... Not that it's a problem, just have a very conservative father that watches my account pretty closely (even though I've moved out for a couple years... gotta get that bank my new mailing address.)

How did it jump 500? Can you post the entire build.
The DVD drive is good, but I don't like that hard drive, you can do much better for that price.

It's 30$ more and you'll need to buy cables, but it'll run much faster with twice the storage.
With the changes we have made it shouldn't have changed more then 100$. Once you hit the 1700+ range you need to go to the Core2duo since they offer more performance.

Hmmm... Ok, I'll have to search around for the cables a bit... My roommate just handed me a SATA data cable, so is that all I need plus screws?

And when I said $500 jump, I meant from the very original build. Heh, and in regards to the edit, I did remove the old ones. I also changed the fan.

yes everything there will still be at tigerdirect, by then you'll be able to find some better prices.
Subscibe to the newsletter at tigerdirect.ca and NCIX.com and you'll see really good deals.
For example I just.....and I mean just finished buying the xtremegamer sounds card for 100$ at NCIX, sale price, normally its 130$ or more.
Keep your eye's peeled, over the coming month you'll see some good deals that'll save you money.
Again look around at NCIX.com, I know for starters you'll save 10$ on your operating system, I have seen it as cheap as 35$ less. Also if you buy products in doubles there you can get combo deals that'll save you around 10% on the second iteam, again another good saver.

That is correct, but I'd wait a month to see if performance increases, because where it stands the 8800GTS has better performance/$. I expect this to change as drivers have yet to mature. Note this isn't the 8800GTX killer, if you want a top of the line card the 8800GTX is still the card to buy.
