Hello GK48 and welcome to the GTG forums. I think we can fix this up. Please proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Important
Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. If it is run from Temporary folders the backups and HijackThis itself could be accidentally deleted if the Temporary folders are cleaned. If it is run from the desktop then the backup files and folders can clutter up the desktop and be accidentally deleted. If it is run from within a zip file it will not create backups at all.

• Please open My Computer
• Double-click on Local Disk (C:)
• Click on the File menu, point to New and then click on Folder. Name the folder 'HijackThis' or 'HJT'.
• Unzip to or copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

Step #2

Start HijackThis and follow these steps:

• Click on Config button
• Click on the Misc Tools button
• Click on the Open Process Manager button

Find the following items and click on each one to select it and then click on the Kill Process button to stop the process.:C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\urwk\urwkm.exe

Step #3

Now click the Back botton and then then the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://www.vroomsearch.com

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #2

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:

• Click Start.
• Open My Computer.
• Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
• Select the View tab.
• Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
• Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
• Click Yes to confirm.
• Click OK.

Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\urwk\ <--folder
C:\WINDOWS\system32\gwss.dll
Step #3

Download CleanUp! and install it. Start CleanUp! and click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run to completion. It may take a few minutes depending on the size of your hard drive so be patient.

Step #4

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps using the Add Reply button and I will review it when it comes in.

Hey Old Timer! Thanks a Million! Vroomsearch and the pop-ups are gone. Your instructions guided me through very smoothly. I was a bit confused about the Clean-up download. All that I could find was CleanUp!v2.5.1.2 from emesoft. Is that the one? It wasn't quite as easy as clicking a 'CleanUp!' button, but on my journey I found a few C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\urwk\ and C:\WINDOWS\system32\gwss.dll files that I removed since they didn't show up after the 'showing hidden files' part in the HijackThis. Was that OK to do? Also, a funny desktop icon popped up twice 'hpoth b 07', once as a jpeg and again as a word document. Any clue? Thanks again Old timer. I'm very sorry that it took so long to get back to you. I'll drop some coins in the cup when I can. GK48. Here is my post:

Hi GK48. No, that wasn't the CleanUp! I was looking at. We never suggest any type of software where a requestor has to pay anything. I don't know why but occasionally some people have trouble getting to the site for CleanUp!.

Instead of CleanUp! try this:

Download CCleaner and install it. Start CCleaner and click the Run Cleaner button. This cleaner is a little different than CleanUp! in that it only cleans up the current user's files but it also cleans out non-associated registry entires (which CleanUp! does not do). I use both of them once a week

Now, about the icons on your desktop. Can you give me a liitle more information about them. The next time one of those appears, right-click on it and look at the properties. Is it a shortcut to a program or just a picture file. What is the target location for what it points to? Post back here with any information you can gather.

It was fine that you deleted those files/folders.

Ok, now to the log. Your log is clean! Good job. We have a couple of steps to perform and then you are all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
* CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

• ZoneAlarm

and a good antivirus like the one you are currently using. It is critical to have both a firewall and an anti-virus application and to keep them updated.
