Excel link with files

I can open any MS Office Pro file, except Excel, by clicking on the file. I have XP Pro (Service Pack 2) with plenty of storage and memory.

When I click on an Excel icon (or file),all I get is a light green blank Excel screen. However, when this screen is there, I can open a file and it is there.

Additionally, I keep losing " Office Attendant", and I have been following instructions, as: Detect and Repair, etc., but nothing fixes the "lost link-?".

Also, the Office 10 programs are all together where they are supposed to be. I right-clicked on Excel to make sure that the shortcut was there and nothing happens. Any Ideas?
