I'm sorry to say this but your looking at getting more then the 8600. The performance are very similar between your current card and that one. Can you please list your systems specs. Also if you really want to look at the budget end of things, wait till next week, things are going to get mighty interesting because ATI is releasing 9 desktop cards on the 14 of May.

Yeah, the video card is your bottleneck.
What is your budget? Again I'd wait till 1 week from now to consider your options.

I don't really know. I just want to be able to play my game without extreme lagging and not pay to much for something I do not need. So I guess I have no choice. But I will do like you suggested and wait a week.
PS: Is ATI compatible with battlefield 2142? Because I thought that I remembered people saying that some video cards were not compatible with that game or something like that. IDK, I will look into compatibility issues tomorrow.

Try the ati radeon X1600, i hear it beat the GeForce 7600 GS in BF2 and BF2142. I'll agree with james with this one on the 7600 and 8600 part. They are not that great as the 7800, 7900, and 8800. Not to mention, BF2 lag on me a little bit on my GeForce 7600 GS. I know the 7600GS with 512MB is only the DDR2 memory. You're better off with the DDR3 memory.

No, don't buy the x1600, the x1600 is worse the the 7600 series, the x1650 is slightly better (these are the two competing series within ATI and Nvidia) but the two card are neck and neck. So buring a x1600 would be like burning money.
Yes ATI cards are compatible with BF2142, when people say some cards are compatible they are refuring to really old cards, some time mobility cards are supported as well, but because of driver issues.
The budget line from Nvidea was a pretty big disappointment and I don't recommend you buy any DX10 card under the 8800GTS 320mb. Performance per dollar for cards under that make no sence. It'd be better to get a higher end DX9 card for the same price as they guy above me already mentioned.

Scrol down to the graph about in the middle of the article. Just to note one thing, there will be 2-4 cards released on monday not the 1 that is mentioned on this article. The budget end is rumoured to be released mid June, but again these are rumours and that article is based on rumours. At this point there is no point on buying a video card, on monday the cards will be released and the NDA lifted. It is then we'll get confermations on when these cards are coming.
The reason why the budget cards are being delayed are due to high demand from Dell, HP and other manufacturers.

So it is going to be a while before I can actually buy the cards right? If that is the case I might as well just buy a 8800 GTS 640MB (about $360) or a 7900 GTX 512MB (about $310). I am leaning towards the 8800 because for about $50 more I get 128MB more and it has DirectX 10 so I will not have to upgrade again in the future. What are your thoughts?

The HD 2900XT has gone up on the sites so that they can test them. It'll be 530$CND and 480$USD. Best thing of all they are highly overclockable, downside it that it'll be required that you have a 8pin connector on your PSU in order to do so.

Edit: Missed your post Jack, wait till monday and I'll be able to tell you what your best card for the price will be. Prices should go down a bit by next friday, expecially if ATI's cards perform well.
