Operating System Version:Windows 98SE
Drive C: Hard Disk Intel Pentium II, 400 MHZ
64 MB Ram
Direct X 9.0
Internet Explorer 6.0 128 bit

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How I noticed a problem:
Cd rom drive disappeared
Sound Card not detected anymore
Had to update Display drivers again

Where I looked to diagnose:
system properties - device manager =Hard Disk controllers
Intel 82371ab/eb pci bus master ide controller
yellow exclamation mark beside:
Primary and Secondary Ide controller (dual fifo)
Performance tab: File System:
All drives are using Ms-Dos compatibility mode
comment on bottom = Master Boot Record Modified

I went to another forum and this is where I was directed to fix the problem: http://support.micro...B;en-us;q130179
But, although I told the person who replied that it made no sense to me......I need to know WHAT to do to fix the problem.....it seems to only tell me WHY I have a problem.....they just told me all the information I needed was there.....I have read it and re-read it to no avail

Can anyone here put the problem into plain english and tell me HOW to get my computer to run in windows 98se with sound, cd-rom drive again, and NO compatibility problems.......

Any directions would be nice.......LOL I have no idea what I did to cause all this to come about....so if ANY further information or file attachments are required JUST tell me....

Thanks

Hi gilloo, welcome to Geeks to Go! <_<

Do you have anti-virus software installed on your computer? If, not install the free edition of AVG, update, and run a system scan.

Download here:
http://www.grisoft.c...s_dwnl_free.php

I'd also suggest you scan for trojans using The Cleaner (free for 30 days):

Thanks, that site is just what I needed

New problem tho......I have no start up disk.....it had a virus and I chucked it.....Now I cant make a new one because my cdrom is not recognized in windows so it cant do a new disk for me when I ask

I dont have any other computer to use........long story

I downloaded a boot98se.exe but it wont let me put it onto a floppy either......it either just stops responding.......or it lets me write to disk up to about 9% and I get a Windows fatal exception error 0D at 0028:C0056E76 in VXD V86MMgr(01) + 0000006A

I am also having issues with when I am in dos mode, my keyboard reverts to a french layout? I have no \ or > only a and e with an accent.......so I couldnt even rename a file.....or get into C:\......opposed to C:\Win>

I'd suggest you download a boot disk from http://www.bootdisk.com on another computer, create the bootable floppy on that system, and then use it to boot your system.

I ran soundcheck and the following was in the report

>>Configuration Settings For : wdmaud.drv<0001>
SOFTWAREKEY : System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\MEDIA\0001
DeviceID : ISAPNP\CSCE825_DEV0000\FFFFFFFF
Driver : wdmaud.drv
Description : Crystal WDM Audio Codec
Active : Driver is Active but is Not Accessible
FriendlyName : Mixer for Crystal WDM Audio Codec

And this I found From Old Dxdiag report that I had run before all the problems
Crystal WDM Audio
Default Sound Playback: Yes
Default Voice Playback: Yes
Hardware ID: ISAPNP\CSCE825_DEV0000\FFFFFFFF
Manufacturer ID: 1
Product ID: 100
Type: WDM
Driver Name: cwbwdm.sys
Driver Version: 4.10.0000.2222 (English)
Driver Attributes: Final Retail
WHQL Logo'd: n/a
Date and Size: 4/23/1999 22:22:00, 82528 bytes
Other Files: cwbwdm.sys
Driver Provider: Microsoft
HW Accel Level: Standard
Cap Flags: 0x0
Min/Max Sample Rate: 0, 0
Static/Strm HW Mix Bufs: 0, 0
Static/Strm HW 3D Bufs: 0, 0
HW Memory: 0
Voice Management: No
EAX™ 2.0 Listen/Src: No, No
I3DL2™ Listen/Src: No, No
Sensaura™ ZoomFX™: No
Registry: OK

Now what, in properties, sound items show up, and show no conflicts etc........AND if I run windows with only autoexec and config.sys from msconfig........I have sound but the display reverts to standard vga?

This computer is old and whacked but I am in the same boat and cant afford a new one.........lol

Any further suggestions?

You're welcome! <_<

Sounds like you drivers may be missing or corrupted. AIDA32 is useful for identifying hardware, and often provides links to driver downloads.
