Hey there,

I've gone through all the steps in the starting out topic and I'm still suspecting somethings wrong. First of all, I notice a lot of pop-ups when I connect using IE... much more than usual. Also, When I check running processes there are multiple IEXPLORE.exe and multiple svchost.exe running. There are also a bunch of other processes running that I am suspicious about.

So, if someone wouldn't mind, could you look over my log and help me out?

Here is the log:

scro,

Hello! and welcome to G2G forums. You may wish to print out these instructions for future reference when you go offline(as instructed below).

===============

When we're done cleaning off your system, I'd recommend that you install all the Critical Windows Updates available from Microsoft, upto Service Pack 1. This will help to make your system more secure and prevent many 'problems' from reoccuring in the future.

===============

Go to www.trendmicro.com, and then:

1. Click "Free Online Scan".
2. Click "Scan now, it's free".

It'll take a few minutes to download (especially with a dialup connection), so be patient. When it's done:

1. Select all available drives.
2. Check(tick) "Auto Clean".
3. Click "Scan".

When it completes, copy the full filename of any files that cannot be cleaned or deleted and post them when your done with the following fix.

===============

Download, unzip to your desktop CWShredder and run it, then:

1. Click "Check For Update"

(If an update isn't available, skip to step #4.)

2. Click "Click here to Download the update".
3. When the new version has been downloaded, click "Save".
4. Click "Fix ->"

===============

Please disconnect from the internet.

===============

Go to Add/Remove programs and remove(uninstall) the following, if present:

BearShare
Messenger Plus! 3

The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.

===============

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.ggnbvaqbg...mKzASfg0teO.htm
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.ktpazeqes...Z3My79SV0w.html

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O2 - BHO: CLSID Support Dll - {32978850-02C0-4F0F-A5E6-C22FB04423FC} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\clsidcore.dll
O2 - BHO: ohb - {999A06FF-10EF-4A29-8640-69E99882C26B} - [SABInprocServer32] (file missing)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BearShare] "C:\Program Files\BearShare\BearShare.exe" /pause
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MessengerPlus3] "C:\Program Files\MessengerPlus! 3\MsgPlus.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [fivewayforkbend] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\list drive five way\TRAYDEFY.exe

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Works Calendar Reminders.lnk = ?

O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search the Web - C:\WINDOWS\Web\Ers_src.htm

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to"view system and hidden files/folders":

folders...

C:\Program Files\MessengerPlus! 3
C:\Program Files\BearShare
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\list drive five way

files...

C:\WINDOWS\System32\abasa5jrp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\clsidcore.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\Steve\Application Data\EGGSBA~1\Jump bash.exe<==preferrable to delete folder in blue containing this file.
C:\Documents and Settings\Steve\Application Data\EXITMA~1\winidlecopy.exe<==preferrable to delete folder in blue containing this file.

Search for...

txfrn11n.exe

...using "Start | Search...".

-

Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them from "Safe Mode".

===============

Reboot your computer.

Post back a new log, report any problems and let me know how everything goes.

IMPORTANT! PLEASE do not restart your computer unless asked, restarting can reinfect your computer resulting in us starting the cleaning up process all over!

Thank you so much.

You're instructions were very easy to follow. However, there were a couple of things I was unable to find.

First of all, I was unable to locate BearShare in the Add/Remove Progams list. Although, I'm not really suprised because I'm sure that I had already uninstalled it a very long time ago. (I can't believe this program left stuff on my computer even this long after, that's ridiculous)

This file was not present (is there a reason why?), C:\Documents and Settings\Steve\Application Data\EXITMA~1\winidlecopy.exe

and no search results came up for txfrn11n.exe

Also, I was forced to restart my computer because I had to log into Safe Mode to delete...

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\list drive five way

and

C:\Documents and Settings\Steve\Application Data\EGGSBA~1\Jump bash.exe

I'm sure there's no problem with that I'm just letting you know what happened...

After I had finished everything I ran Hijackthis again and here is my most recent log:

Hello stro,

The things you found or didn't find are not surprising, no need to fret over them. However, I do want you to run the free online scans in step #10 below and report back. Other than that.....follow thru on all recommendations!

Congratulations at last, your system is clean and free of spyware! Want to keep it that way?

Here are some simple steps you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
a. Windows Update: http://v5.windowsupd.../en/default.asp

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first option, 'Download signed controls', to 'Prompt; set the
second option, 'Download unsigned controls', to 'Disable'; and finally, set 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'Disable'.

3. Download and install the following free programs
a. SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacools...areblaster.html
b. SpywareGuard: http://www.wildersse...ywareguard.html
c. IE/Spyad: https://netfiles.uiu...ww/resource.htm
d. Bugoff: http://www.majorgeek...wnload4308.html

4. Install Spyware Detection and Removal Programs:
You may also want to consider installing either or both of AdAware (free version) and Spybot S&D (freeware). Use these programs to regularly scan your system for and remove many forms of spyware/malware.

Before adding any other Spyware Detection and Removal programs always check the Rogue Anti-Spyware List for programs known to be misleading, mistaken, or just outright "Foistware". You will find the list here: http://www.spywarewa...nti-spyware,htm

5. Install 'Spoofstick"
Spoofstick is a simple browser extension that helps users detect spoofed (fake) websites. This extension is free and installs in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.

6. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. See the links below:
a. ZoneAlarm
b. Kerio

7. Reset System Restore
If you are using Windows ME or Windows XP, please reset your System Restore.
a. Turn off system restore by right clicking on "My Computer" and go to "Properties"->"System Restore" and check the box for "Turn off System Restore". Click "Apply" and then "OK". Restart your computer. Reverse these steps and turn "System Restore" back on and create a new restore point.

8. Use GoogleToolbar - It's free, blocks popups and takes seconds to install. Use the toolbar without the advanced features enabled(check this during install), the toolbar is completely inert--it doesn't send any information to Google whatsoever as you surf.
a. GoogleToolbar

9. RegScrubXP 3.25 - Safely cleans junk out of the Windows. 2000/XP system registry. All changes made to the registry are fully restorable to it's original condition.
a. RegScrubXP 3.25

10. Online Virus Scans - Run these on a regular basis(I usually do about once a month or suspect a problem):
a. http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm
b. http://www.windowsec...com/trojanscan/
c. http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
d. http://www.bitdefend...can/licence.php

Good luck, and thanks for coming to our forums for help with your security and malware issues.

1. Visit Windows Update:
- Done

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
- Was already set like this, so I just left it.

3. Download and install the following free programs
- Done

4. Install Spyware Detection and Removal Programs:
- Already had them installed.

5. Install 'Spoofstick"
- Done

6. Use a Firewall
- I'm using the one that came with my Norton Anti-Virus 2002. Good idea or bad idea? Should I use one of the ones you suggested instead?

7. Reset System Restore
- Apparently my system restore was already turned off. So I just had it turned on. Is this ok?

8. Use GoogleToolbar
- I haven't downloaded this because I'm using Mozilla Firefox. Is it not safe enough? or should I use the google toolbar? (can I use it with Firefox?)

9. RegScrubXP 3.25
- Done, I haven't ran it yet though, I'll do that this afternoon.

10. Online Virus Scans
- I'll also do this this afternoon, then I'll post my results from it and step 9.

It depends....is Norton's up-to-date? If so then it is ok!

7. Reset System Restore
- Apparently my system restore was already turned off. So I just had it turned on. Is this ok?

Make a new Restore point.

8. Use GoogleToolbar
- I haven't downloaded this because I'm using Mozilla Firefox. Is it not safe enough? or should I use the google toolbar? (can I use it with Firefox?)

Firefox is safer....you can download for IE if you want.

10. Online Virus Scans
- I'll also do this this afternoon, then I'll post my results from it and step 9.

No need to report unless you can't remove anything found.

Thank you njustice
