Have you changed the association with the file, and tell it to use word always?

you can change the file unassociated file types by doing this. right click the file then click open. a dialog box should appear saying no program is associated with this file. you'll get 2 choices. choose select the program from a list. if word 2003 is on the list chosse it. if not..click browse to locate word2003. select the always use this program to open this kind of file box click ok and that should do it...

For years I used Eudora but a couple of weeks ago my ISP suggested I use Thunderbird. The error occured under both email clients.

This will take some research to figure out.
It's Google Time
In the meantime if anyone else has any ideas feel free to jump in.
Some general things you can try.
Uninstall and reinstalling a complete of Microsoft word and your email client.

Reinstalled Word 2003 and Thunderbird 2. Still the same error message. Does the fact that Open Office reads them without any problems give any indication?
Thanks John

Sorry for the long reply takes a lot of research.
Try sending a HTML format email to yourself.
Does it come up with the same error.

I think this has to do with the fact that it is an e-mail, and as such has header information included. Look at this tool from Microsoft it is supposed to remove the headers and all personal information. Here is more information on the Hidden data tool .

Thanks, that seems to have fixed it.
