CD Drive Icon

I have a compaq presario running windows 98se.

The cd drive icon appears and disappears.

What are the possible causes of this and how I can I resolve it?

When you say, "The cd drive icon appears and disappears." does this happen when you're logged in during a single session of Windows?

If the CD drive icon appears during one sitting, and then you restart the computer and the CD drive icon disappears, then you may have a loose cable connecting the CD drive to the motherboard. Check the IDE or SATA cable that connects the CD drive to the motherboard and ensure it is properly secure on both ends of the cable.

Furthermore, you may have a faulty CD drive. But that's a rare occurrence.
