I will be building a budget pc for a friend of mine. I know Intel builds are the way to go right now, but that's too expensive for him. He plays mostly older games and doesn't need anything too high end. I put this list together including monitor for under $600.

I was thinking of getting an 8600GT instead of the 7600GT. They're not too far off in price. And I'm still trying to decide if Vista or XP would be better for him in the long run. Any thoughts? Or any parts that you would pick out differently?

You really don't need 800MHz RAM for a budget build. If it's going to be budget, then go for 533, maybe 667... Try re-configuring with that and see how much you can save...

And my suggestion is to go with Vista, try looking at Home Premium, it seems to be the way to go... Why bother going back to an operating system that's 5+ years old?

If you don't mind dealing with a mail-in rebate, then I would look at this case instead:
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16811129155

Antec makes quality PSUs while Apevia PSUs are somewhat suspect. Now, if you're buying that case purely for aesthetic reasons, then that's a personal preference, obviously, but a quality PSU is very important to any build. I agree with ruthandtroy on the RAM issue. Also, if you can wait a couple weeks ATI will be releasing the X2600 which is designed to compete directly with the nVidia 8600 and, if rumors are true, outperforms it in most cases. If nothing else, you should see a price drop in the 8600.
