I recently defragmented, and that's where my problem begins.

Now when I turn on the computer, Windows 98 appears on the screen but will not load. After I reset, I'm taken to a screen with 7 choices, and the Safe Mode choice is highlighted. I attempted to reload Windows 98 from the E (DVD-ROM) drive, but My Computer does not show this drive as an option in safe mode -- neither does Add/Remove programs' Install button -- , so I can't access the CD to reload Windows.

Here's my Hijack This log, if it helps.

CD Units don't work in Safe Mode under Windows 95, 98 or ME which kind of defeats the whole point of safe mode in the first place.

You should be able to boot straight off the Windows 98 CD by changing the boot options in your BIOS to boot from CD first.

Thanks for your help. How exactly do I change the boot options in my BIOS to boot from CD first? I'm not familiar with the BIOS.

When you start your computer, check the boot-screen for setup key, some require you to press DEL key to enter setup

You may have to go into the Advanced Bios Features or Boot Sequence to choose Boot Devices, choose first boot device to CDROM and second boot device to HARD DRIVE

You can press F10 to save settings.
